THE huddles, far into the night, that Jack Warner, Charlie Feldman and Howard Hawks have been having the past week have had interesting results. Jack is taking over the Feldman-Hawks screen play, Cry," and will produce it at a cost of S4.000.000. He will be executive producer, Hawks director and producer, and Charlie co-producer. Nor can she help herself. It's all quite spine-chilling when poor Irena begins presenting dead canaries to the zoo's black panther, padding along after the normal American girl her husband should have married and springing at the psychoanalyst who was unprofessional enough to kiss his distraught patient. Simone Simon is at once- pathetic and frightening as the unhappy heroine never quite certain whether she's going to leave slipper or paw prints, claw people or things to pieces. Kent Smith's husband is not unnaturally wretched; Tom Conway, who could double vocally for George Sanders, is the psychoanalyst; and Jane Randolph, the fear-crazed girl Simone, in her best black leopard guise, chases right into the swimming pool.

Eerie, dark photography and Jacques Tourneur's ingenious direction add to the ominous quality of the strange fable. This is by no means a documentary film, according to Jack, but rather human interest stories of the United Nations. Originally Feldman had discussed the story on which he has been working for nine months with Universal. The cost of production decided them against making it.

But Jack is so sold on the Idea the big budget didn't phase him. Clark Gable, who spent over a week in Hollywood, said au revoir to his closest friends before he returned to camp. He expects to be sent overseas soon. Of course, no one knows where he is headed, but those in whom Clark confides say he will be very happy when he sets into a combat zone and sees real action. I know that's the kind of a guy Clark is and that he won't feel he is really in the service until he jets a whack at Uncle Sam's enemies, i Lieutenant Charlie Lederer is now in the Army, but his fame as a director and a writer remains at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.

The present production, coming after an interim in which Summertime," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin' and other songs have attained wide popularity, has far outstripped the original.

She wants to quit pictures cold and spend the rest of her life being: just Mrs. Phil Harris. I can't say she wants to settle down to the hearth and fireside, because being married Phil means traveling all over the country wherever his band plays.

But Alice likes the life and even talks about taking the Harris heiress along. However, there is still the matter of a 20th contract that has about a vear and a half to run so we shall see what we shall see about Alice retiring.
