FORMER PROFESSOR D. D. CUSTER DIES: VETERAN PHYSICIAN Manayunk Doctor Practiced Here For 5S Years C. K. Lukens Dies Of Heart Ailment; Banker Was 59 Charles Kirk Lukens, vice president and a director of the Chestnut Hill Title and Trust died of a heart ailment yesterday at his home, 8051 Stenton Wyndmoor.

He wn.i 59. Long active in banking circles, he was for many years an officer of the Central Trust and Savings Bank, 4th and Market which closed in 1931. He was a member of the Union League, the Philadelphia Country Club and the Whitemarsh Country Club, of which he was treasurer for many years. Surviving are his wife, the former Rebecca V. Pechin; his mother, Mrs.

Alice Barton Lukens, and a daughter, Mrs. Frank B. Ellis, of this city. 79 Josiah Blackwell Bartow, assistant treasurer of the Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company for 27 years, died ye.stcrday of a heart attack. He WM Mr.

Jlnrtow, who lived at 521 K. Gravers lane. Chestnut Hill, whs a banker for 52 years. He was associated with the Philadelphia National Bank 25 years previous to joining the Fidelity-Philadelphia Company. He was a graduate of Episcopal Academy and a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution and the Ixiyal Legion.

He is survived by a son, Francis Allen Bartow, of Radnor, and two daughter. Mrs. Shirley C. McCall and Mrs. James Talbutt, both oi Chestnut Hill, and five grandsons.

David Berlinbcrjr David Berlinberg. central city real esta broker wno retired 12 years ago, died yesterday at the Jewish Hospital, He was 74. Surviving are a son, Abram Berlinberg. and four daughters, Mrs. Carrie Wolfson, Mrs.

Gertrude Gorman, Mrs. Martha Kramer and Miss Ethel Berlinberg. Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. from 1512 N.

Broad st. Bid WAS cerned with the photo-dynamic effects of vital 'dyes, the result of five years of investigation, which was considered one of his most important works. Dr. Tennent wan born in JanrRvllle. May 28, 1873.

He was graduated from Olivet College, in 1900, and received a doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1904. He was Bruce Fellow at Johns Hopkins in 1911-12. LECTURER IN BIOLOGY He Joined the Bryn Mawr faculty as lecturer in biology in 1904, becoming an assistant professor the following year, associated professor the year after that, and a full professor in 1912. In 1938 he became tho first to receive an appointment as research professor at the college. Dr.

Tennent was a member of the corporation and a trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, where he conducted many investigations, and had been chairman of its committee on fellowships in the embryology department. He was an executive officer of the Tortugas Marine Biological Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. David Hilt Tennent, internationally known biologist, research professor of biology at Bryn Mawr College, died suddenly yesterday at his home, 818 Summit drove Bryn Mawr, He wa.i 67. A former president of the American Society of Zoologists, Dr. Tennent had been associated with Brvn Mawr College for 36 years. PUBLISHED PAPER ON DYES Scientists throughout the country were familiar with the careful papers which, on the average of slightly more than one a year. Dr. Tennent had published since 1906. At the time of his death he was engaged in active research in his private laboratory in Dalton Hall. Bryn Mawr College, and was preparing papers on his investigations.

Last year he published a paper con- W. H. Hensel Dies; Church Worker William Henry Hensel, prominent church worker and retired manufacturer, who died Monday in the Chestnut Hill Hospital, will be buried Friday after funeral services at 2 P. M. in Mt.

Airy Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant and Germantown aves. Mr. Hensel, who was 75, lived at 346 Roumfort st. He was president of the Hensel-Colladay Manufacturing makers of braid, until his- retirement in 1928.

After his retirement he devoted his full time to the church, serving as president of the board of trustees of the Presbytery Philadelphia North; representative of the Synod of Pennsylvania and a member of the committee on foreign missions. Surviving are his wife, Grace, and two daughters, Katherlne H. Hensel and Mrs. Grace H. Davis.

Horace B. Baroux Horace B. Baroux, belived to be the oldest gas service veteran in Philadelphia, died Monday at his home, 316 W. Godfrey ave. He was 91.

Mr. Baroux started as a lamp inspector with the old Bureau of Gas in 1872. When the city leased the Gas Works to the United Gas Improvement Mr. Baroux continued to serve in the distribution field. Eight years ago, when he retired, he was the oldest employee of the Philadel phia Gas Works Co.

Mrs. Bye wan the widow of Frank Paxson Bye, who was associated with her In the management of the seminary and also was a member of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania for many years. Mrs. Bye was a concert pianist and taught music at the seminary.

She was a native Philadelphian. She is survived by a son. Frank P. Bye, Jr. Funeral services at St.

John the Evangelist's Protestant Episcopal Church at 2 P. Friday, will be followed by interment in Fernwood Cemetery. Henry Hammer Funeral services for Henry Hammer, Philadelphia fireman for 29 years, will be held tomorrow at 1 P. M. from his home, 2051 Palethorp st.

He was 62. Mr. Hammer, who died Sunday at his home, retired last June. He was stationed at Engine Co. 15, Columbia ave.

Grimes died suddenly Sunday. He was an accountant and tax consultant. For a number of years he was superintendent of Calvary Presbyterian Church Sunday School. He is survived by his wife. Fila, and a daughter, Mrs.

There is no entry fee of any kind. Funeral Services For J. li. Wheelock Funeral services were held yesterday for James Riley Wheelock, onetime clarinetist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and F. bandmaster, who died Friday at his home, 7401 West Chester pike.

Upper Darby. A native of Green Bay, Wheelock played football under Coach Glenn (Pop) Warner at Carlisle in 1894, and later studied engineering at Dickinson and Lehigh Universities before taking up the study of music at the University of Leipzig, Germany. After several years with the UIondon Philharmonic, he returned to this country to found his own band. During the World War he saw action in the Argonne with the 103rd Engineers, Pennsylvania National Guard, and was awarded a cup by Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler for conducting the best band in the A.

Dr. Custer was a police surgeon for number of years, and was active in the affairs of the American Medical Association and the State and County Medical Societies. He was a member of the board of managers of Jtcx borough Memorial Hospital, and 6 trustee of Manayunk Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a. sister.

Mrs. Mary Mosteller of Phoenix ville. and a brother, Unas Custer cf Norristown. Edward Norris, Ex-Banker, Dies Edward Norris, retired banker, and authority on birds nd wild flowers, died yesterday at Jus home. 18 Waterman ave, Hill.

He was 72. M. Norris was assistant secretary cf the Girard Trust Co. for 14 years, retiring in 1939. An ardent cricket is his youth, he played with Philadelphia Cricket Club and participated in cup matches at Jamaica End Bermuda.

A trustee and member for many years cf the Delaware Valley Ornothologists Union, Mr. Norris was considered an authority on vile flowers and birds. He was a member of the Philadelphia Club end University Barge Club. Surviving are his wife, the former rrr.rsa Biddle Dixon; two daughters Mrs. S.

Carson, Jr. James G. Carson. former City Councilman, died Monday night in Lankenau Hospital after a long illness. He was 73.

Mr. Carson, who lived at 824 N. 24th served in Council during the Kendrlck and Mackey Administrations from 1924 to 1932. He was a Republican worker for many years and a life-long resident of the 15th Ward. He was formerly in the dyeing and finishing business, succeeding his father in control of the business.

His wife, Anna, died in 1932. Mrs. Lucy Lewis, Pacifist, Dies Mrs. Lucy Biddle Lewis, known internationally as a pacifist, died yesterday at her home. 506 S.

Lans-downe Lansdowne. She was 80. Mrs. Lewis was the widow of J. Reece Lewis, who died many years ago.

She was a member of the board of managers of Swarthmore College and for several years was national chairman of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. After the World War Mrs. Lewis was active in the reconstruction work carried on by the American Friends Service Committee. An active suffragette and prohibitionist, Mrs. Lewis was an organizer of the Owen Avenue Friends Meeting, Lansdowne.

She is survived by a son, Clement Biddle Lewis, of ltiverton, N. a daughter, Mrs. Lydia Lewis Itickman, of London, England; two brothers, a sister and five grandchildren. 9 P. M.
