Talk about a busman's holiday! Billy Mills, music director of the Blue's "Fibber McGee and Molly" and NBC's "The Great Gildersleeve," gave his annual year-end party for the members of his orchestra, and for many of the men, it was the only party they'd had time to attend during the holiday season. So what happened? They brought their instruments, and had a jam session! Orson Welles, who never can do things as anyone else would do them, held to his formula recently when he selected Phil Silvers, long-time comedian, for a highly dramatic role in "Ceiling Unlimited," Welles' aviation program heard via WCAU-CBS on Monday nights. She had been singing around the night spots since she was in her 'teens, admired by musicians but little known to the public.

Two years ago, she tried New York, but radio had singers aplenty, and she went back to Boston. Critic John Hammond heard her during one of his periodic scouting expeditions, and mentioned her to Artie Shaw. She made four records with the Shaw band and then things began to move. She auditioned for a "guest appearance" on a network program, and within 24 hours, she had a 13-week contract, bids from other programs and offers to star her in her own show. Her name? Memo to Admiral Halsey: Bob Hawk got a five-year renewal contract (with options) for his "Thanks to the Yanks" quiz show which is aired on Saturdays at 7.30 P. via WCAU-CBS. Originally signed for nine week, the show was so well received by the public and by the armed forces who are the direct beneficiaries of the quiz winners' prizes that the new contract resulted. To date, winners and losers on the show have contributed more than 611,000 cigarettes to men and women in the U. S.

armed services, here and abroad And talking of cigarettes, here's a story that covers a lot of geography. When prize lighter Barney Ross, who was recently decorated for heroism, joined the Marine Corps, Lou Costello gave a party for him at his Band Box Cafe. Throughout the evening, Ross kept chiseling cigarettes from Costello, because he was on the air for a cigarette sponsor. "Stop grubbing cigarettes," Lou teased him. Last week, Martin Jaffers of the Merchant Marine, visited the Band Box Cafe.

"I've just come from the Solomons," he told Costello, "and Barney Ross gave me this Christmas package to deliver to you." In the package was a note, reading: "Here's a pack of cigarettes and a coin, to make up for those I grubbed from you." The package contained a Jap coin and an unopened box of Jap cigarettes that Ross had snared when he defended that foxhole on GuadalcanaL ate practice. He was a member of the staffs of St. Mary's.
