SportsTalk 1150-AM SPORTS DIGEST Auto racing Rick Mears raised his top speed in practice to almost 227 mph on Tuesday but wouldn't be drawn into a guessing game of what it would take to win the pole position for the Indianapolis 500. Mears already has won a record five poles at Indy. He and Johnny Rutherford are the only drivers to win the race twice from the pole. Mears, whose best speed in practice last year was 226.655 mph, was beaten for the pole by teammate Emerson Fittipaldi, who set 1-and 4- lap records in qualifications of 225.575 and 225.301. Chris Gehrke, who sustained severe head injuries in in a stock car race at Talladega Super- speedway, died Tuesday at a Birmingham hospital.

Cullen Clark, spokesman at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, said Gehrke, 25, of Lincoln, died at 10:25 a.m. in the neuro-intensive care unit, where he was treated following surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Gehrke never regained consciousness after suffering the "massive head injury," Clark said. Gehrke's Oldsmobile was involved in a five-car wreck late in the Poulan Pro 500- Krace. Baseball Omaha Royals owner Gus Cherry has given the city until May 17 to come up with a local offer to buy the minor-league team or he may sell it to someone who will move it, Mayor P.

J. Morgan said Tuesday. "Keeping the Royals in Omaha is of paramount importance," Morgan said. "This has a real sense of urgency." Morgan said losing the Royals could affect Omaha's ability to keep the College World Series. Morgan said Cherry indicated he has at least one such offer from an outsider.

Mike Nicklous, owner of the Class AA Memphis Chicks, has offered Cherry cash for the Royals and would move the Omaha franchise to Memphis, the Omaha World-Herald reported Tuesday. Memphis has a metropolitan population of about 900,000. Omaha has about 600,000. Basketball Nebraska junior forward Tony Farmer, declared ineligible to play next season by the NCAA, said Tuesday he will apply for the NBA draft. Farmer, who averaged 12.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game last season, said he was declared ineligible for violating an NCAA extra-benefits rule when he received a low-interest car loan.

In order to be eligible for his senior season, the 6-foot-9 forward would have to be reinstated by the NCAA. The school recently disclosed that Fanner and teammate Jose Ramos were supplied with car loans in February by Raymond J. Peery, the suspended executive director of the Central Interstate Low- Level Radioactive Waste Compact Commission. Peery has been charged with diverting $600,000 of commission funds for personal use. Football Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne said he doesn't plan to read a recent article in Sports Illustrated, a magazine he hesitantly agreed to give an interview.

"Looser in Lincoln," a four-page story on the Cornhuskers, appeared in the May 6 edition of the magazine. Osborne said he gave up reading Sports Illustrated several years ago after seeing several articles he felt were not good for college athletics. Osborne said he originally told Sports Illustrated senior writer William F. Reed that he would rather not be interviewed. Osborne said he doesn't think the article will put any extra pressure on him even though it termed the upcoming football season as "more crucial for the 'Buskers than for just about any other traditional power" and the "most important season of his (Osborne's) bittersweet career in Lincoln." Hockey Mario Lemieux had a goal and an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame superb goaltending by Boston's Andy Moog to beat the Bruins 4-1 Tuesday night in Pittsburgh to even the Wales Conference finals at two wins apiece.

Lemieux set up Bob Errey's game-opening goal midway through the first period, then scored the clincher halfway through the third period.
