33-C Saturday, April 19, 1980 Philadelphia Inquirer Fletcher wins bout, maybe last as an amateur Philadelphia Inquirer RICHARD M. TITLEY His match with Muhammad Ali in the future, Larry Holmes watches his brother in the Mid-Atlantic AAU finals By Tommy West Inquirer Staff Writer Anthony Fletcher, a former National AAU boxing champion from the Southwest Youth Center, stepped out of his corner last night and threw an overhand left that tumbled Rufus Turner of the Passyunk Gym the canvas AAU finals the National Guard Armory in the Northeast. Turner got up and finished the fight, but Fletcher won the 132-pound senior open match by decision. That normally would have qualified Fletcher for the regional AAU tournament next Saturday in Upper Darby, but after the fight, the Rev. Elvin Thompson, Fletcher's trainer, said his boxer might turn pro and skip the regional finals.

"This is something we've been contemplating for a long time," Thompson said. "It may be time for him to lay the trophies aside and put something in his pocket." Fletcher was a national AAU pion 'nationand has won the Ohio state tournament four times. If he indeed is ending his amateur career, he is doing it with an overall record of 145-12. "I hit him with a good punch and hurt him," Fletcher said of his knockdown punch. "But I didn't want to overexert myself trying to knock him out since this may be my last amateur fight." In the feature match of the evening, Marvis Frazier, son of former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier and the top-ranked amateur heavyweight in the country, stopped Ricardo Peterson of Yorkside on a technical knockout at 1 minute, 15 seconds of the second round.

In another match involving a wellknown family name, Mark Holmes, the younger brother of World Boxing Council heavyweight champ Larry Holmes, lost a split decision to Marvin Shuler, the younger brother of two-time Golden Gloves champion James Shuler who represents Frazier's Gym. Earlier, Roland Cooley of Frazier's Gym was in a close fight after two rounds against Nick Starkey of the Chester Cobras in a 125-pound senior open fight, but came out with a relentless attack in the third and final round for the win. Midway through the round, referee Ray Paquet gave Starkey a standing eight after Cooley had count backed him into the ropes and scored Roland Cooley of Joe Frazier's with a hard barrage. Cooley, who was disqualified during the Golden Gloves last month in Shreveport ducking too low, didn't want this fight to get away from him. The winner said a soft ring surface gave him more trouble than Starkey.

"My feet were so far into it (the surface), I couldn't move like I wantwould have stopped him if it hadn't been for the ring. But I Gym ducks a right from Nick couldn't move like I wanted to. I don't normally fight toe-to-toe." In an upset, Van Holmes of the York Recreation Center combined an aggressive style with a combination of right jabs and hooks to decision Vincent of the Frazier Gym. In other bouts: Billy Uhi of Rosati's Gym decisioned Yahya Al- Tawheed of East Germantown in a 139-pound senior open semifinal (Uhi returned later to decision Tyrone Reddick of Beresin in the title Jerry Owens of Rosati's Starkey on his way to a win in a 0980 decisioned James Avers of the Athletic Boxing Club, 106 senior open; Robert Robinson of the 23d PAL decisioned Fred Pendleton of Yorkside, 112 junior open; Francis Childs of Chester Cobras won by forfeit over Raymond Evans of Passyunk in the 112-pound senior open; Bryant Paden of Germantown decisioned Larry Stanfield of Germantown, 125 senior novice; Marvin Garris of the ABC decisioned Stanford Thomas of Beresin, 125 junior open; Mark Dawkins of ABC decisioned Victor Rawlins of Passyunk, 147 senior novice; Carl Poole of Germantown decisioned Fred Brooks of Southwest Youth Center, 147 senior open; Wayne Fleming of 23rd PAL decisioned Glen Butts of ABC, 156 senior novice; Colin Johnson of SWYC decisioned Anthony Becton of West Philadelphia Youth Association, 165 senior novice; Marvin Mack of Passyunk decisioned Bobby Stokes of Together Brothers, 165 senior open; Kelvin Kelly of WPYA decisioned Dawud Shaw of Chester Cobras, 178 senior open; and Erest Johnson of ABC decisioned Kevin Bunch of Frazier's Gym, heavyweight senior novice. Never thought Ali would fight me: Holmes Only about 500 persons showed up last night for the Mid-Atlantic AAU boxing finals at the National Guard Armory, Roosevelt Boulevard and Southampton Road, but a couple of the spectators were prominent figures of the sport.

Larry Holmes, the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, came from Easton to see his younger brother, Mark, fight Marvin Shuler in a 156-pound senior bout. Mark Holmes lost a split decision. Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion, came to see his son, Marvis, in a heavyweight fight that was the last match on the long card. Holmes, sitting at ringside signing autgraphs and taking photographs, said he was surprised that former champion Muhammad Ali will be making his comeback with a fight against him. "I never thought that Muhammad Ali would ever fight me," Holmes said.

"He never wanted fight me when he was in his prime when I was a top contender. I know damn well he wouldn't want to fight me when he's 38 years old." Holmes said he thinks Ali is making a mistake in his comeback bid. "I don't think he's anything to prove. I think he's going get hurt. I will hurt him.

I have no feeling for anybody who gets into the ring and tries to take my head off." He predicted victory. "There's no way in hell no way in the world that he will beat Larry Holmes." Frazier, however, said he thinks differently. Sitting in a dressing room watching the 76ers game on television, Frazier said he thinks Ali has a good chance against Holmes. "Oh yeah," he said. "The way Larry has looked in his last couple of fights, he couldn't hurt me." A reporter asked Frazier if that statement meant he might consider coming out of retirement to fight Holmes.

"No, no, no, no," he said, grinning broadly. "You can say that 40 times." Shannon bats, pitches Paul VI past Audubon Paul VI's Bob Shannon put on a show for several college scouts while batting and pitching his team to a 14- 8 baseball win at Audubon High yesterday. Shannon collected three of the Eagles' 12 hits, batted in three runs relieved starter and winning pitcher Frank Freijomil with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning. With a 10-8 lead, Shannon, a shortstop, got out of the jam by striking out two straight hitters. He then fanned four more in the last two innings to get the save.

In other action, Eastern handed Cherry Hill East (5-1) its first loss, 8- 3, behind Gary Dunn, who threw a for five innings in his first varsity start, and Peter Shaw, who hitter drove in three runs. Reliever Dave Whitcraft helped with a two-run homer. Pennsauken Tech's Louis Martinez, after striking out four times Thursday, hit two doubles and two singles for four runs batted in, but the Tradesmen lost to Camden Catholic, 7-5. Maple Shade defeated Woodrow Wilson, 12-6, and Bishop Eustace got hits from everyone in its lineup during an 8-3 win over Berlin Tech, including Steve Scian's two single in the third inning. Unbeaten Gloucester Catholic (8-0) ripped Overbrook, 8-1, behind winner Steve Zelvis and two hits each by Dennis Barth, Dan Babcock and Mike Evangelisti.
