NICOLL BRO'S Variety Store. From Our first Virginia Regiment We have bad newa from our First ginia Regiment. Col. Gavin, of the 7th Indiana, arrived at Bellair last evening, over the Baltimore road, badly wounded, having been shot clear through the breast, lie makes the following statement: On Saturday evening last after the terrible battle of that abont 200 of the 1st Virginia and a like number of the 7th Indiana were upon the field, drawn up in line of battle in consequence of a report that a largo body of men were approachiog. As soon as the bodv of men approached within hailing distance they were signalled to halt, and4were asked who and what they were.

They answered that they were friends, and their colors being demanded they showed the United States Hug. Our boys then proposed and gave threo cbecre for the Union, and while they were in the midst of their cheers, the rebels (as they proved to be)suddenly lowered their tuns and delivered a most deadly fire. Ool. fell shot through the breast. lie says tho slaughter in both regiments was great.

He saw Col. Thoburn and Major Duval afterwards, both of whom were unhurt. From them be learned that the fire had proved deadly to our troops. They gave him no particulars and he was not in a condition to ask for any. Marshal Law Declared in Cincinnati Business Houses Closed.

Cincinnati, Sep. undersigned, by order of Mitj, Gen. Wright, assumes command of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. It is but fair to inform the citizens that an active, daring, and powerful enemy threatens them with every consequence of war, yet the cities must be defended and the inhabitants assist in the preparations. First.

All business must be suspended at nine o'clock to-day, and every business house must be closed. Second. Under direction of tho Mayor citizcns must witbiu an hour nfter suspension of business assemble at convenient public places ready for orders as soon as possible. They will then be assigned to their work. This labor ought to be of lovo, and the uudersigned trusts and believea it will be so; anyhow it must be done.

The willing shall bo properly credited, and tho unwilling promptly visited. The principle adopted is citizens for the labor and soldiers for the battle. Martial law is hereby proclaimed in the three cities, but until they can be relieved by military, tho injunction of this million will be executed by police. Third. Ferry boats will cease plying the river after 4 oclock, A.

until further orders. (Sigued) Lewis Wallace, Moj. Gen. Commanding. In accordance with the proclamation of Major Gen Wallace, I giro this notice that the polico forco of this city will, uotil further orders, act as Provost Guard; and I order and enjoin npon all good to respect aud obey them as such.

Anv disregard of orders from the General commanding, through the police, will bo enforced strictly. Gro. IIkaoquartkrs, U. S. Forcks, Cincinnati, Sept.

2. j' General Order No, All places in the cities of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport, where liquors of any kind are sold must be closed at A o'clock this morning. All sales are prohibited. Upon failure or refusal, the stock on hand will be confiscated for sanitary purposes. By order of Maj.

Gen. Lewis Wallace. II. Elston. A.

D. C. Chief of StafT. Pm-is was evacuated last night, troops falling bnck on Cynthiana. Gen.

Wallace was engaged all night making preparations for the protection of tho city. The Latest from our Army at Centreville and Bull Run. New York, Sept. Herald in an editorial says Up to 1 o'clook this morning we bad no news of the renewal of the great contest near Boll Run. Tbe very latest at that hour in tbe city was a dispatch from Judge White, of this city, who bad returned to Washington from our army at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

He states that our men aro in good spirits, and as firm as veterans. They bold Centreville and tbe vicinity, with part of tbe old battle field of Bull Ran. The tone of feeling in Washington was full ol confidence. Our army in the field was being rapidly and powerfully strengthened, and amplo preparations were made for the care aud relief of the wounded. Dispatches and correspondence received last night speak confidently of tbe safety of Gen.

Bank's command, and represent the rebels as being in an extremely critical position. It seemed to be generally believed at Washington that the Union lines were quietly flanking and closiug around the rebel army, and that their escape, at least without fearful loss, would be Should this idea of tho situation prove correct, thero will bo bloody work soon, for the rebels are far away from their supplies. They cannot have a surplus of provisions, and should their communication with Western Virginia be interrupted, starvation would literally stare them in the face. As to their making a rush into Maryland, wo are over nnd over assured that such an attempt would be frustrated. Altogether, the situation seems to promise early an! decisive victory, should no unforeseen disaster mar the plans and prospects of the moment.

Piiiladklpiua, Sept. telegraph from Gape Race we have a summary of news brooght by tbe North American from Liverpool on the 21st, via Londonderry on tbe 22d of August. The London Times treats the conscription as a new act of despotism, and thinks that involuntary servitude is now the lot of the white race of the United States. The Newt and Star continue to defend the cause of the North. It is claimed by the Paris Payt that the harvest in France is tbe best in ten years, and that no corn will be needed from abroad.

It is said that Napoleon has expressed decided condemnation of Qaribaldife movements in tbeTurin Senate on 20th of August. Patazzi, in reply to a question by a senator, declared that the government considered Garibaldi in a state of rebellion and the situation of Italy grave. Garibaldi had entered Catania. In tbe London money markets the foods were weaker, and tbe fall is attributable by tbe London Timet to tbe telegrams in the extras giving the ne.ws from America. Money was in good deutand at rates.

From Fortress Monroe Fortress Aug. of Porter's mortar fleet and tbe gunboau bare come down the James river, and are now at anchor in Bampton Roads, and a part of tbe flotilla which has been up the river it to immediatelj to tbo Potomac. So save Com. Wilkes. Tbis morning tbe Norfolk boat, which bas heretofore run regularly between Norfolk and tbis place, came over with troops and discharged tbem on tbe steamship Baltic, which is lying in the Roads.

She then returned to Norfolk without the mails, apparently for more troops to dispose of in tbe same way. There is evidently much secret excite, ment among tbe Federal oflioers in tbis place, and the secessionists at Norfolk are rejoicing at what they claim to be a defeat in the late army movements under Gen. Pope. A part of the James river flotilla has left this afternoon and proceeded off in the direction of the Potomac. Wasbimotoh, Sep.

Provost Guard is busy to-day in closing up all the liquor establishments. Tbe captures are sent to tbe Medical Purveyor's offiee. LAST NIGHT'S DISPATCHES. Washington, Sep. advices received from the vicinity of the late sanguinary conflict of our armies in Virginia, with the enemy, report affairs in that locality as comparatively quiet.

The news from that quarter to-day has been, considering tbe intense excitement and bustle prevailing, decidedly meagre. Rumors and stories of the most extravagant nature have been circulated throughout the city, a great majority of which have been fonnd, upon inquiry, to be entirely unreliable. Parties who left Centreville late yesterday afternoon report that the command of Gen. Banks, which had been rumored cut up, commenced arriving at that point about five o'clock p. m.

There can be little doubt of the correct ness of this report, as our informaui states that ho witnessed the arrival of tho command. It is further stated that a march of 25 miles was accomplished by them ou that day in order to reach that position. On Sunday morning between eight und nine o'clock 15 of the ambulances being in advance of the train down a hollow, were captnred. In all, there were 230 ambulances and hacks. About 2,300 wounded have so- far been removed from the field.

These movements were facilitated by Maj. W. C. Baruey, of New York. Yesterday evening at 6 o'clock our army was withdrawn behind tho bills of Centerville as a feint, it is believed, to draw out the enemy, but they did not advance.

Tbis morning our army again advanced at least 2 miles toward the old battlefield. Tbe large reinforcements wbicb have arrived there, consisting of artillery and infantry, make the army perfectly safe. No firiog took place after 0 o'clock on Saturday night. Kearney's division remained on the field till 11. On Sunday some shells were thrown into the enemy, but no response was made.

Tbis morning a slight skirmish took place with Gen. Kearney's division. In tbe recent battle Qeu. Hatch was wounded slightly; a ball penetrated the brim and body of his felt hat and flattened in the skull. Tbe dead were being buried, and tbe wounded removed to-day from the late sceno of conflict, uuder a flag of trnco.

A train of cars, having ou board fivo or six hundred soldiers who were wounded in tbe fight on Saturday, came down tbis afternoon from Fairfax. They represent, among others, tbe 25th Ohio, Gtb Regulars, 35th N. Y. and a number of other regiments. A guard also came down, having in charge seven rebel prisoners.

ARMY OF TUB SoUTilWKST, "I In the Field, Fort Scott, Kuns.is, 1 August 20, 18C2. Correspondence of tho Mo. The greatest activity prevails here in getting the army ready for immediate advanco towards Arkansas. Gen. Blunt, commanding the forces hero, baa received information that all troops in the department of Kansas, and all those inSnutbwest Missouri, Including all the recent levy of militia, will be concentrated at such point as besball designate.

This portion of the army is finelv equipped, and contnius four complete batteries of 8 guns each. Troops have been brigaded, and different commanders ordered to their commands to suitable places East and South of Fort Scott, where a full supply of forage, grass, fuel, and good healthy water can be obtained. Information has just been received here confirming the report that the rebels are concentrating in large numbers at Cross IIollows with the intention of marching North to take Fort Scott then Fort Leavenworth. Qen. Pike bad made a speech to his men sayinghe intended to be at Fort Leaven, worth before snow fell.

There is no doubt that such is the idea held out to the rebel force now concentrating at Cross llollows, and the recent excursions under Cochrell and Coffee to Lone Jack was for the purpose of escorting the new levies down to Arkansas. Hundreds of men followed them and with two pieces of the Indiana battery which they captured at Lone Jack, but they were mostly without arms. Day before yesterday Quintrell bands came upon six companies of the 2nd Kansas and three companies ot the Gth Kansas near Lamar. Msj. Campbell and Capt.

Greene of the Cth attacked them with abont GO of their men aud had a severe fight, lasting two honis, in whioh two men were killed and 21 wounded. Lt. Col. BasseU, commanding the 2nd Kansas, marched upon the opposite side of the stream ont of danger. The wounded men say the rebels had about 700 men, and if Bassett had helped them they would have whipped them.

Col. Cloud left his force day before to report at this plase. All say that bad he been there, Quiotrell and Hays would have been taken. Chicago, Sept. Commissioners of the Union Pacific Railroad met at Bryan Hall at noon to-day.

Gen. Curtis was chosen temporary chairman, and by acclamation proceeded to address the meeting upon the important work upon whioh they had been called upon to enter. Robt. Finney, of and John R. Robinson, of were appointed temporary secretaries.

The roll was called and 7G answered to their names. ftfr. Cass moved to proceed to permanent organization. Some discussion ensued on amotion that when the meeting adjourn it do so until to-morrow morning at ten o'clock. Lost? 31 to 39.

Without taking action on the motion (or permanent organisation, the convention adjourned till 5 P. M. Grkexpikld, Sep. Lippert has obtained another signal success over the guerrillas in Southeast Missouri with a squadron of the 13th Illinois cavalry, two companies of the 24th Missouri volunteers, and one howitzer of the 2d Missouri artillery. The Major attacked Col.

whose force la estimated at 1000 meo, about twelve miles Southeast of Pittmsn's FlITjr, on Current liivcr, after a desperate conflict of an hour's duration completely routed White, capturing all bis wagons and equipage and taking many also number of horses and males. Our loss in killed and wounded is not stated, but is slight compared with that of the enemy. Hsadquartbrs or tub Army, Adjctakt General's Ofpicb, Washington, Sept. 2. General Order, No.
