The Sallna Journal Friday, April 10,1987 Page 12 Cougar track teams cultivate lofty ambitions By STEPHEN WHITE Sporti Writer "We won't be going to any meets to finish last this year," announced Chuck Culley, whose Salina South track and field squad has spent the last two seasons trying to avoid the cellar in most of its meets. Each of those seasons, the Cougars jelled at the end to close with fine showings at regional and state. Culley doesn't expect success to be that far down the road this spring. "We do know at this point we have a good track team, and I emphasize the word track," Culley said. From the sprints through the distance events, the Cougars are fast, balanced and, at places, deep.

Off the track, four seasoned Cougars hope to excel at the jumping events. Only in the throwing events and pole vault are they lacking. "And we've got some hopes there," Culley said. Not to imply that the Cougars are disregarding traditional wisdom, but this squad is built from the distance events up. With Jason Goertzen as their anchor, they have no choice, though their stable of sprinters is well stocked.

Only a junior, Goertzen already has established himself as one of the better distance and middle distance runners in the state's history. As a sophomore, Goertzen set a Class 5A State Outdoor record in the 1,600 meters He opened his junior season with a commanding victory in the state cross country meet. Scoreboard South track schedule APRIL 11 Wichita State Relays, 10 a.m.; 14 KNIGHT'S RELAYS at Salina Stadium, 4 p.m.; 20 McPherson Invltatlona, 4p.m.; 24 luhler Invitational, 3:45 p.m.; 28 Hayl Invitational (rescheduled), 3 p.m. MAY 8 Darby Invltotlonol, 3 p.m.; 12 Newton Invitational, 3p.m.; IS League Meet at Junction City, 4 p.m.; 23 Class 5A Regional at Salina Stadium, TEA; 29-30 State Outdoor at Wichita, TBA. "We'll take a Jason Goertzen in the distance events any time we can get him," Culley understated.

"Of course, (if) you take a kid of his caliber and take him to state as a sprinter, he'll win the meet for you because he can score 40 points instead of 20." Junior Tim Suttle, fifth at state in the 3,200 last spring, will help the Cougars double up on distance points. "By the end of the year, we hope to have a quality 4x800 relay team," Culley said. "Mike McCall, who is a distance runner, has been working on the 800 and we expect him to be under two minutes before the year is over. "Jeff Crough and Billy Short have been really good utility men for us, working at whatever event we needed them in, and we've had them working on the 800. They're both competitors and will run a good half- mile for you." In the 400, which Culley has always considered the heart of a track team, the Cougars are young but potentially dangerous.

Seasoned juniors Gary Jayne and Kevin Dolton will shoulder the leadership roles, while sophomore sprinters Joe Roche and Jesse Haggard build the stamina necessary for the event. "I am very comfortable with that middle- distance crew right there," Culley said. The crew includes senior sprinter Corey Moye, who also is going to try to build the endurance necessary for the longest of the sprints. Moye's forte, though, still may be the shorter sprints. He, along with all three of his teammates, is back for another crack at the state title in the 4xlOO-meter relay.

"We don't have that bona fide (state champion)," Culley said, "but we've got a lot of good, tough kids who are going to score points in the Senior Phil Oliver has placed at state in the 100 and 200 each of the last two years. Returning with Oliver and Moye from last year's 4xlOO-meter relay team that placed fifth at state are senior Shawn Springer and junior David Auldridge. Toss in junior transfer Juan Anthony, who ran on Salina Central's 4x100 team last year, and the Cougars have a dogfight brewing in the sprints. In the traditional format, Coach Andy Deckert's girls' squad is built around its sprinters, a crew Deckert labels "state contenders." Senior LaJuanna Williams, fifth at state in the 200, anchors 4x100 and 4x200 state championship relay teams that return intact from a year ago. South's 4x100 relay team is working on an impressive foundation of five consecutive state championships, a feat accomplished without the benefit of a 100-meter champion.

"All the credit there has to go to the girls for the hours they spend with coach (Penny) Nelson, working on their nandoffs and getting their steps down," Deckert said. Returning with Williams on those relays are seniors Dawn Keeler, Amy Peterson, Cori Sanchez and Amanda Levin, and junior StaciKrier. Krier placed third and fifth at state in the high and intermediate hurdles last year, and Peterson ran the sixth-fastest 400 at state. Keeler will concentrate solely on the sprints this spring, shirking her former specialty, the hurdles, because of recurrent knee injuries. Sanchez and Levin will join Peterson in the 400, where they should all be pushed by junior Missy Gustin.

Juniors Ellen Dreiling and Cathy Johnson and freshman Nikki Ludes head an improving distance corps, and underclassmen Lisa Blevins and Mindy Killion hope to score in the weight events. "We have really experienced young women returning for their last season," Deckert said. "I also see some young kids that have to realize somebody's going to have to follow in the seniors' footsteps. "We have several very, very good seniors on this team, but we also have tremendous opportunities for participation by some younger kids."
