Received daily, and for sale by the case, can, or hnlf can by 8CHULZ THUSCHEL, novf Market Btreet. sportive young gentlemen of this city, thoroughly posted in its ins and outs and ripe lor fun, recently hit upon a lucky idea.

Procuring an old pocket book they posted inside of it in staring capitals the word, Sold. Then they laid it down on the iron grating in front of that excellent hotel, the Sprigg House. Retiring to the curbstone, they patiently awaited developments. Presently a well dressed man made his appearance, sauntering slowly along. His eye fell upon the pocket book.

He looked around cautiously but quickly to see if any one was going for it. Visions of fast horses, a well lilted cellar, a hospitable board, and a downy couch, lloated before his mental vision. Possibly he thought of endowing a college, building a hospital, or contributing to a church. Just then he observed the two young gentlemen standing close by. They must not see him.

Therefore he delayed picking up his prize. But it was too valuable to lose. Kach succeeding second saw him edgiug closer and closer to the coveted wealth. He is now close by it. His foot conceals it.

With one anxious glance around him, he stoops quickly, clutches with a death grip the inestimable pocket book, and walks off more quickly thau he came, whistling the touching air, "Sweet Home." We leave our readers to follow him in imagination to the silence and security of his own room, and to picture to themselves his "pheelinks" and his expression of them, when it became patent that he had only Cow a laughable scene was presented on the wharf yesterday morning, abeut ten o'clock, to a large number or intelligent and interested spectators. Some movers, bound for the land of the getting sun, had brought their household and other effects to the wharf for the purpose of shipping them on one of the steamboats lying there, and prominent among the valuables was a tine cow and latter a good chunk of a heifer. To get tliww two aboard the boat was the question. Having had no previous acquaintance with river craft, they manifested a very decided disposition to remain dry ground. The movers were as determined they should not have their own sweet wills.

Accordingly, a very exciting contest commenced between owners and owned. Roth parties ran ttiis way aud that with frantic eagerness. Up and down the wharf they coursed. Finuily, so far as the calf was was concerned, the higher grade oi development settled tho matter. It was headed oft', caught and securely tied.

The cow, however, being older and stronger, could run faster thun her than her human pursuers. She wont up Monroe street at a slashing pace, and, the last wo saw of her, was turning the corner to go down Main. Tho wholo party of movers now turned out in their strength, but whether good mifltress cow was captured, we are unable to say, as we didn't go to see. wnatit Costs to Call a Man a Black Abolitionist. Rocently ho forgot thut it was Sunday, and dealt out his liquors the same its though It was an ordiiiary Sat urday. For this he was lined. The reineinbranco of his woes still agitated his breast, when Joseph Gartner recently visited his saloon for the purpose of quenching his intolerable thirst. Mr.

This Joseph iudigtiautly denied, whereupon Mr. S. picked up a poker, and informed him that ho was a black abolitionist aud several other things, which will not bear repeating. Mr.

S. did not appear at the Police Court, yesterday uiorulng, in answer to a summons with which he had been but, as the witnesses in thocase did, it was all the same. He was fined live dollars aud costs. Tiik Meteoric heard, yesterday and the day before, great disanpoiutment expressed by various individuals that they had sat up for two nights in succession and lost sweet sleep to nee the predicted display of celestial lire-works, but that their undoubliug faith had met with a sad return. Asking for bread, they received stones.

Crying with hunger, they were put off with promises. And thoy were disposed to diHbellevo in tho infallibility of scientific men. At this writing, 11 p. a few stars arushiningserenely through tho broken clouds, but them- is no appearance of any meteors darting about.
