More or less is being written about tho great wheat proouoing territory that is being opened up and developed by the building of long linos of railroad in tho East Itulis and in Persia.

This newly dovoloped fiokl is tho strongest competitor in the grain markets of Europe that this country has. Tho faot is that tho climate, soil and cooditions aro so favorable for tho production of wheat, that it is entiroly too strong a competitor for our wheat. It lias to a largo extent supplanted us in the best markets Amorioan wheat formorly had. Tho grain is grown thore cheaper than in any other portion of the world, and can bo laid down in the markets of Europe, since tho building of these lines of railroad, at a price considerably choapor than our wheat. It may bo of somo intorost to note tliot this formidable competitor of American wheat is a product of tho high protective tariff system of tho Kopublican party.

When tho MoKinloy bill was passed and English goods wore taxed out of our markets, Groat Britain began to look about for somo country whoro it could exchange manufactured goods for grain. Tho East Indies and tho Persian plains presented an inviting field but lacked shipping facilities from tho interior. This led to tho building of tho railroads and tho development and extention of the greatest wheat producing territory in the world. This loses to us those markets for nil time to corao.
