6816 333B 3 Believed Indicated If New Business Does Not Soon Develop BOSTON, Aug, 30. Due to the extreme lethargy of the woolen and worsted goods market throughout late spring and summer, extensive curtailment Is Indicated In the woolen branch of the textile Industry unless a substantial volume of new business develop In the next month or so. There Is a fair chance that orders will pick up within this period when prices for the spring of 1938 are made some time after Labor Day, although any prediction to this effect would be based on hope rather than on signs now apparent. WEAVING LITTLE AFFECTED Already there Is considerable curtailment In the preparatory departments, such as combing, drawing and spinning. Within the next wtck.

or so this may reach the point In at least the major woolen manufacturing center of Lawrence where employment is only about a half of what It was In these departments at the spring peak. The preparatory departments are of course first to reflect changing conditions. Thus far weaving departments have not been greatly affected. Enormous yardages of t'ods were sold during the earlier months of this year to private buyers and the Government and deliveries against present orders will not run out for another month. The fact remains, however, that only the release of new business In considerable volume will prevent the curtailment from extending to weaving.

To date the spring buying season very late. Prices have not been formally posted and probably will not be until after Labor Day. Not only Is this holiday late this year but Just after It come Jewish holidays which are a trade deterrent in the big New York market. BIDS FOR V. S.

WORK Any real stimulus may not come until Mid-September, although some help will be afforded by opening of bids on Sept. 7 on 500,000 yards of uniform cloth for the Government. Anticipatory buying of some months ago is In part responsible for currency lethargy. Woolen and worsted manufactur es, a uumut-r oi wnom are conn- aent mat a good spring season lies ahead and that curtailment will be short-lived, are closely watching prices at present.
