Satisfied that they could be of further use to their community in continuing the cause of Americanism, this group of men organized the F. D.

and I. S. Clair Post No. 37, American Legion, and dedicated themselves to the principles of justice, freedom and democracy. Though humble at its beginning on June 19, 1919, Clair Post today with its large membership 604 active and its many and varied activities increased in scope and effectiveness, is, in the words of its present commander, Meyer A.

Abrams. "an un dying shrine to those whose supreme sacrifice lor humanity will ever be an inspiration." MANY ACTIVITIES Clair Post today, keeping pace with the rapid growth of the American Legion throughout the country, sponsors many community activities, including a Sons of the Legion Squadron, a Boy Scout Troop, a Junior Auxiliary and a very progres sive Americanization and Citizenship program. On March 15, last, the Post celebrated the 20th anniversary of the founding of the American Legion by presenting two iron lungs, one to the Women's Homeopathic Hospital and the other to the Northern Liberties Hospital. In recognition of this donation, considered by the Post as part of its Americanism program, a silver plaque was presented to the members at the past State convention in Williamsport for "the most outstanding community welfare work in America GIVES ANNUAL AWAIJD Clair Post also is known for its Annual Award presented each year at the Memorial Day banquet. This award, conferred upon a worthy citizen of Philadelphia, or vicinity, is given for distinguished service for the public welfare.

At present, according to John A. Dervin. adjutant, and former post commander, the Post's major program deal3 with "the abolition of certain un-American and subversive organizations." As a start, Dervin pointed out, resolutions have been adopted and sent to City Council and the State Legislature asking that proper ordi nances and legislation be drafted to "curb those organizations whose pur poses are foreign to the democratic principles of these United States." HIGH "TYPE CITIZENSHIP In line with the present program. Max Slepin, State vice chairman of the Americanism Committee and past commander of Clair Post, had this to say: "In these perilous times Clair Post, ever mindful of Its obligations to the community, State and Nation, is de voting all of its efforts in order to develop a high type of citizenship to the end that true patriotism might ever prevail and our American institutions of freedom, justice and democracy can continue to be handed down unblemished from generation to generation." Gobin Cranage, State commander of the Spanish-American War Veterans, declared his organization would support any neutrality legislation which will "keep us out of war. We don't see anything In the foreign situation that would warrant the sacrificing of lives of American boys at this time." Olympia Ship Post, 19th and Arch county officers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars plan to expand their program of Americanism in an effort to keep the United States neutral.

Edward F. Hickey, county com mander, said his organization will pledge active support of legislation that will keep "American men from being sacrificed in an European squabble. "The Veterans of Foreign Wars," he said, to keep this country out of the present fight. not far from Paris, that Biemuller, then a wagoner with the 110th company, 103d sanitary train of the 28th Division, learned that "war is hell." CALLED FOR EXTRA DUTY As an ambulance driver or wagoner, it was Biemuller's job to return injured soldiers to the field hospital, lunnlng a gauntlet, as It were, between the American front lines and the emergency station a mile to the Fatalities and injuries already had sharply reduced the available number of wagoners, so Biemuller was called upon for extra duty. It was raining "cats and dogs" as the drive got under way and continued much i the same for the next three days. Biemuller reluctantly tells of his experiences during the three days and nights, but the facts are that for the next 72 hours, 48 of them without rest or food. Biemuller drove the Injured and dying back to the field hospital. SHELL HITS CAR It was Just after he had reached the front with his ambulance on the night of the 10th that the big shell, part of which he now values so highly, struck his car, wrecking it and wounding him in the shoulder.

In spite of his injuries and the fact that he had been gassed when his mask, ripped and torn, leaked, Biemuller refused medical treatment and went back to his injured comrades at the front. Another ambulance which he was driving was so peppered by the Ger man marksmen that it resembled a sieve on his return to the hospital, he said. ENLISTED AT 19 "I never worked so hard or so long in my life," said Biemuller, who enlisted in 1916, when he was 19, to serve on the Mexican border. He sailed for France in May, 1918, and a few days after his arrival was at the front. Other engagements in which he participated included the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Sept.

26 to Oct. 9, and the Thiaucourt sector drive, Oct. 15 to Nov. ll, 1918. In appreciation of his services a grateful Government on Nov.

28, 1913, awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross with the following citation: "For extraordinary heroism in action near Fismes, France, Aug. 10 to 13, 1918. Because of the destruction from shell fire of 10 of the 13 ambulances of his company. Wagoner Biemuller worked for 72 hours, 43 of them without rest, driving through a hell-swept and gas-infested area and thereby making possible the evacuation of the wounded." G. A.
