her devoted housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. FRIGHTENED YOUNG WIFE There is the Rebecca legend, too. And all these things accomplish their evil work, separating Rebecca's frightened young successor from the memory-ridden man she married. Then, and to tell more would dissipate the film's enjoyment for those unfamiliar with the book, comes word that the body of Rebecca has been found in the cabin of her capsized boat.

How the ghost of Rebecca is laid forever provides an amazing conclusion, vicious, vigorous, completely satisfying. OLIVIER AS DE WINTER Superb casting has placed Laurence Olivier in the role of Maxim de Winter: has given Joan Fontaine the difficult assignment the second wife; and has brought that fine actress. Judith Anderson, back to films to create a fear-inspiring portrait of the demon housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Upon the strength of her beautiful, touching performance as the gauche interloper at Manderley, Miss Fontaine can no longer be regarded simply as Olivia de Havilland's "little sister." Her present work sets her apart as one of the screen's truly fine, sensitive actresses with infinitely more to offer than mere prettiness.

SUPPORT EFFECTIVE Supporting players all contribute effectively. The settings David O. Selznick has supplied as background are quite as perfect, quite as carefully and atmospherically contrived as those he lavished upon that other dramatization of a best seller, "Gone With the Wind." When Mr. Selznick buys the screen rights to a book, it is apparent he believes in abiding by that book something not so common as to be dismissed lightly. The only Important change in "Rebecca" Is the fault of the Hays office, not that of Selznick or of his capable scenarists, Robert K.

In his Individual fashion, he has re-told In his own creepy, colorful way Miss du Maurier's forbidding, fascinating story of life and death, malignancy and murder. All this was told me by Darryl Zanuck, who is in Salt Lake City today with Henry Hathaway, the director, and Lamar Trotti, the writer, delving into the records of the Mormon Church and talking to the descendants of Mormon fathers. Dean Jagger, as you know, is all set to play Brigham Young with Don Ameche a likely candidate for the role of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church.

Jane Darwelt and Carradine in Cast YouH see Jane Darwell as Elizabeth Kent and John Carradine as the famous Indian Either Kay Francis or Mary Astor will be signed for the Mormon elder's first wife with Dorris Bowden as Zlta. the younger one. "Brigham Young" goes into production immediately. 4 "Angel in Furs," bought by Paramount in 1035 for Carole Lombard, is being remodeled to Loretta Young's dramatic measurements. Not at all the luxury tale it sounds to be, "Angel" is really a story of the great open spaces of the North and has much the same background as "Call of the Wild." Loretta Young Hailed in 'D octor Takes a Wife Remember when Loretta made this years ago with Clark Oable? Come to think of it, I don't believe she's done one of these outdoor epics since.

Speaking of Loretta, my preview chorus of kids who see all the "sneaks" are doing raves about her in "The Doctor Takes a Wife." Advance reports of this picture are a surprise since it was very inexpensively made and everyone wondered why Loretta accepted it. The name Sigrid Ourie, headlined when it was discovered that she was born in Brooklyn and not in Norway, has practically been forgotten in Hollywood. Sigrid married Dr. Lawrence Spangard and since that time has made only one picture, "Rio," at Universal. Sigrid Gurie to Play Refugee Daughter Well, Sigrid is getting her big chance now.

She plays Leni, the refugee daughter of a Viennese doctor. In "Doctors Don't Tell," with Charles Coburn and John Wayne in the other two Important roles. The story is modern, touching only on the concentration camp in Austria when the girl and her father escape. The town is still chattering about Winnie Sheehan's "Florian' and the magnificent Arabian stallion star of the film. In all justice to Robert Young, Helen Gilbert and Irina Baronova, the "human" actors, lt'is Florian who steals the show.

Audience Applauds Florian Scenes The preview audience applauded again and again as the magnificent animal went through his paces ungulded by a human hand. Winnie has concocted a film abounding with box-office appeal and his friends are glad he has such a hit in his comeback as a producer. Chatter in Hollywood: Bill Girard, who claims to have been Lois Andrews' big moment before she fell in love with Oeorgie Jessel, Is carrying a torch a mile high. He was at the Club 17 telling everyone within hearing that he had his airplane passage booked and was all ready to fly to Lois when the papers front-paged the story of the prospective marriage of the 15-year-old Lois to 42-year-old Jessel. Maybe Girard can cheer up, if it's true the Andrews-Jessel combination is a press agent yarn, as has been rumored in Hollywood.

Ann Sheridan to Lampoon Harvard A line or two: You cannot say Ann Sheridan hasn't a sense of humor. Invitations to her preview of "Now It Can Be Told" are to be a parody of the llajjvard lampoon. The date is next Tuesday 9 1 I nearly fell out of my chair when someone from my home town, Dixon, sent me a notation from the Dixon Telegragh saying that Orson Welles was the grandson of old man Sheffield, who owned the Sheffield house In Grand de Tour, six miles from my home town, Orson, it appears, as a lad set fire to the inn, thereby achieving undying fame in Dixon. Gail Patrick to Announce Ball Game Snapshots of Hollywood Collected at Random: Laralne Day's big heart throb Is Sydney Gullaroff, M-G-M hair stylist. Fay Helm, recently divorced, and Lew Ayres, have been talking things over.

Gail Patrick will announce the baseball game Saturday between the Hollywood Stars and the Seattle team. Liz Whitney with Tom Shevlln, New York millionaire, at the Sphinx Club, with her usual escort, Gene Towne, sitting at a nearby table with Lucille Le Sert. Billy Arnold, well-known actor, is seriously ill at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Hepburn Trip to Hollywood Hinted Katharine Hepburn is closing her show, and everyone is wondering if shell head directly for Hollywood. Merle Oberon, who was quite sick when she went East, is back again entirely recovered.

Margaret Lindsay's constant escort in Florida is Jack Sterling, New York Dorothy Lamour, wearing a leopard skin hat and muff, was at Ciro's last night.
