LONDON, Sept. 24. America's hope of winning the Schneider International seaplane race at Cowes. Friday, suffered a severe setback today when a 700 horsepower Wright machine crashed near Portsmouth during a trial ppin. Lieutenant A.

W. Gordon, the only occupant was unhurt. It is said the machine cannot be repaired for Friday's race. The accident was caused by one of the propeller blades flying off and cutting one float in half. The Wright plane was considered the best American entry and was much more powerful and substantial than any other plane.

Lieutenant Gordon broke the speed record for flight in a seaplane twice at Philadelphia. The Schneider trophy for seaplanes is to be raced for off Cowes, Isle of Ujght. September 28. Great Britain, i ranee. Italy and the United States are to be the competitors, each nation represented by three machines with one in resery.

The American team, consisting of four officers and seven men of the United States Navy, has for their three active service machines, two Cur-tiss racers and one light navy plane. One of the fastest British machines intended for the race was disabled by an accident early this month and had to be withdrawn.
