Southwestern Points The Lincoln Highway is excellent to Gettysburg with only one detour of any account at Downington, which has recently been remedied by the. opening of a temporary bridge across the Brandywine. Motorists bound down the Shenandoah Valley may reach the "Valley Pike" via Gettysburg, Chambersburg, Hagers-town and Winchester, the pike being in good condition through Harrisonburg to Staunton. The road from Baltimore across Winchester, via Elliott City, West Friendship. Lisbon, Harper's Ferry and Berryville is marred by a long detour between the last named points.

From Chambersburg west the Lincoln Highway is in good shape to Pittsburgh. The 'Reading pike to Pottstown and Reading is also good. -A good road leads from Reading to Allcntown. From Reading to Harrisburg the William Penn Highway is in good condition with short detours in, Hershey and Hum-mellstown. From Harrisburg to Carlisle, Shippensburg and the Lincoln Highway at Chambersburg the roads are also reported good.

Visitors to the Masonic home at Elizabethtown. will find a good road leading there from either Harrisburg on the north or Lancaster on the southeast. Coal Region Detour s. From Ryeading to Pottsville via Hamburg and Orwigsburg the road is good. In the coal regions there is a detour between Palmerton and Bou-manstown on the road from Allentown to Manch Chunk.

The best route to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton is via the Bethlehem pike to Allentown. to Bethlehem, Belfast, Wind Gap, Snydersville, Bar-tonsville, Swift Water, where bear left through Pocono Summit- Suoddarts-ville and Bear Creek to Wilkes-Barre. Traveler to Scranton proceed straight ahead at Swift Water to Mt. Pocono. Tobyhanna, Daleville, Moscow and Scranton.

iiiiihi bg! "Who owns and -where is the oldest antomobile of standard American make still in running condition? That's what the management cf the National Automobile shows in Grand Central Palace, January 7 to 14, and the Coliseum, Chicago, January 2S to February 4. wants to know, and it would like to hear from persons who believe they are entitled to the honor of such ownership. The purpose of the show management is to give the public a chance to compare the car and equipment furnished in the earlier days with the wonderful devices and appliances that are standard now; in other words, to show the value the purchaser is getting now as contrasted with the pioneer days. Most of the cars at the first automobile show in 1909, and for several years afterward, were known as "one lungers," because they were driven by a single cylinder gasoline engine. Two passengers was usually the limit carried.

The equipment was practically nil. Candidates are required to. send details of the make of car; the year of manufacture, the manufacturer's number, if possible; an estimate of the number of miles the car has run; what changes, if any, have been made, and as nearly as possible the date and distance of its last run, with a photograph of the car. ANT of the causes of the sudden stopping of the engine, as given in the last lecture, may be the cause of the engine refusing to start. Jf after cranking the engine five or six times it does not s-tart, stop cranking and locate the cause, or you discharge your battery and possibly 111 I i cause it to overheat, tnus ruining it.

In addition to the troubles which will cause the engine to stop are others Mil II if which might cause it not to start. When the engine has been running it is hot. and while running all of the parts are moving quickly and the suc A tion is vigorous. Wben we start alter it has been idle for a while, it is cold. The automobile has brought the "old folks at home" much closer to the children who have taken np their abode in the city.

At no time in the year is this more evident than at Christmas when hundreds of family automobile parties set forth on the trip back to the. old home in the country or some nearby town there to celebrate the holiday in the old familiar atmosphere. For the many Philadelphia motorics who will travel during the Christmas, the Touring Bureau of the Automobile Club of Philadelphia has prepared the following resume of road conditions along the principal highways that radiate from Philadelphia like the spokes of a great wheel: To the South The Baltimore pike is open and in excellent condition to all points in Northern Maryland. The West Chester pike is in splendid shape from its beginning at Sixty-ninth and Market streets, to the West Chester terminus. Excellent roads lead from West Chester to Paoli and from West Cbesr-ter to East Whitford the Concord pike is good.

Motorists living along the- Main Line and all drivers living in West Philadelphia who wish to avoid the rough surface of the lower end of Ridgo avenue en route to Norristown, Pottstown, Readbig. may avoid bad going by using this route: Lincoln Highway to Bryn Mawr, Morris avenue and Spring Mill road to West Conshohocken, cross Schuylkill on newly opened bridge and follow through Conshohocken to Ridge road, where turn left for Norristown and points north, Going further south the Club Touring Bureau states that south- of Washington the roads are fair to Fredericksburg, but not so good from Fredericksburg into Richmond, the gand clay roads having suffered from the wet weather. Travelers bound for Hot Springs. or White Sulphur, W. are advised to store their autos at Staun- and our cranking turns it over very slowly so that the parts are moving slowly and the suction is mild.

Wh effect will the coldness and slow cranking have on the three es sentials, namely, compression, ignition and mixture? The compression is us-uallv less when the engine is cold than when it is warm. Can loss of com er flooding is not liable to cause trou- ble-. but it often does on warm days. Opening the throttle valve too much or not enough will often be the cause of the engine failing to start. There is no rule which can be given as to this, as tome will start only when the throttle is wide open, while others will not start, notably the Zenith, under this condition.

Experience alone will tell you the right position for the throttle control lever, though with most carburetors one-third open is about right for starting. Is the carburetor adjustment liable to be the cause of engine not starting? Not if the engine started easily last week and always before. Where the engine constantly is difficult to start. even though it seems to run well after starting, the mixture adjustments may be at fault. The adjusting screws are about the very lasts thing-you should touch, however.

I might say here that a tendency of the engine to stop while running slowly and idle is often due to the mixture Should our engine then fail to start, how should we proceed and what should we look for? Of course, the first thin? to, do is to be sure that you have done all the things necessary to start it, nanrely. the throwing on of the switch, the feeding of gas to the carburetor and a gentle priming. Not having forgotten any of these, and the day not being cold, we would by flooding the carburetor see if we are getting gasolene. If yea, then, we will test the spark, as for stopping. If we get a spark, then we tan be reasonably sure that trouble is one of mixture.

It may be water, so try draining the carburetor and try to start again. If the day be cold, then you now can be certain that the trouble is in the failure of the gas to vaporize and reach the cylinders, and you will have to resort to priming. Should you feel certain that tie mixture is not at fault, and get the rpark, then, by cranking by hand, test your compression, and that being O. try the spark plugs. The free bridge on the Lincoln Highway over the Delaware River at Trenton will be. closed until February and motorists bound to New York are advjsed to bear left at Falsington and proceed over the former route of the Lincoln Highway to the Calhoun street toll bridge. This surface is not -quite so smooth as the other route, but it avoids the three-quarter mile "crawl" up a dirt road from the closed bridge to Calhoun street. tem? Where this is suspected as the trouble the remedy is to spin the engine vigorously.

With the exception of the low voltage, due to the slow cranking, when the ear is equipped ltd a magneto we might say that the ig nition troubles which might cause fail ure to start are. the same as fortne sudden stopping of the engine. bat about Here is the cause of about 90 per cent, of the starting 4rouble. as both the cold and slow cranking will afiect tne carburetor action. It takes a certain amount or heat to vaporize gasoline, and.

Due to the suction a certain amount of gasoline will be sprayed out of the carburetor- nozzle and with 'some air will travel toward the cylinders.

On the way it will strike the cold manifold, and much of it will condense so that we will practically get noting but air into the cylinders, and the engine will not start. After the engine has started the suc i uuaaeipnia Auto mobile Trade Association and by other automobile dealers not members of the association at the annual meeting for drawing for spaces for the twenty-first annual automobile show at the Commercial Museum Building, Thirty-fourth street below Spruce, from January 14 to 21, was conclusive evidence of the optimism of everyone engaged in the business, and a Successful show. Every member of the association was present or represented and, in all, spaces were drawn for seventy-two different makes of cars, in addition to any that may be included from non-members if there is available space. The meeting was presided over by Mr.

Iiouis C. Block, president of the association and chairman of the Show Committee. Mr. Block explained the -Dew method of awarding spaces, which was in the chronological order of membership the association, instead of by auctioning off a limited number of spaces for which the successful members paid an extra fee. Plans Approved In lieu of that more than two-thirds of the spaces were made in practically equal size, giving everyone a choice of large or small spaces, and providing for ample room for the larger exhibitors.

The plans seem to be universally approved and resulted in general satisfaction. In tallying up the exhibitors it was found that of the seventy-two cars to be shown, sixty-four were makes which were exhibited last year and eight were cars which were not shown in the 1921 show. Five new makes of cars never before exhibited in an automobile show hre will be displayed here, namely, the "Vills-St. Claire, the Durant. the Gray and the Earl, all gasoline water-cooled cars, and the Fox, a newcomer in the air-cooled field and a Philadelphia-made car.

After a lapse of years the Stevens-Hnryea comes back and will be shown, and the Wescott reappears in the Philadelphia exhibit. Also, the Rolls-Royce makes its first appearance here in the show, having recently secured a distributor here. Accessory Drawings The drawings for accessory exhibitors were held on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in thirty-two exhibitors taking space fo far, as compared with forty-two last year, although there is still accessory space available and there will no doubt be other applications. This was the launching of a movement to co-ordinate the activities of all of the commercial organizations in the leading Pennsylvania cities in a movement to check up on road construction and maintenance in cities and roads connecting various towns and cities. The matter has been nnder discussion for some time, but as a result of the recent checking up and survey of streets and roads in Philadelphia county, performed by members of this committee, all prominent automobile men, the movement finally has been definitely put under way. General Secretary X. B. Kelly has started to arrange with the other organizations for the co-ordinating of this work.
