MARTIN WASHINGTON (AP) American agriculture increased Its efficiency still further last year by adding one more person to the number for which the average farmworker produced food, fiber and tobacco. In other words, farm production last year was sufficient to supply 27 persons for each farm worker, including farm operators, employed In farming. The number was 26 In 1960. Improved technology, both on and off the farm, has enabled farmers to produce Increasing quantities of farm products with a decreasing number of workers.

In 1961, farm workers made up Ifess than 4 per cent of the total population compared with 8 per cent in 1940. These facts, brought out in an Agriculture Department report, showed that 4 per cent fewer man-hours of work were used in agriculture last year than in the previous year. Man-hours of work in agriculture rose until 1918, but since then the decrease has been greater in each decade than in the previous one despite es in the volume of production and the number of consumers. Work on crops took 4.5 billion of the total 9.6 billion man-hours used last year. Only about a third as much labor is now used on crops as was required 50 years ago, but livestock excluding horses and mules takes about 80 per cent as much as half a century ago.

Of the 658 million bushels of this corn placed under supports, 119 million bushels were delivered to the department in full payment of loans in August. The loans expired July 31 and farmers had the privilege of extending them another year. Obviously few farmers consider extension of these loans worthwhile. Weather Bureau crop bulletin I has raised the prospect today that the new farm legislation came too late to get much reduction in! plantings of winter wheat for 19631 harvest. i This legislation, now President Kennedy's signature, offers payments to farmer who voluntarily reduce wheat acreages at least 20 per cent below their crop control allotments. The purpose of the offers is to help reduce a big grain surplus. Of course, farmers could get payments by plowing up a part of their planted acreage, but little in a financial way could be gained by most of them by doing that.

The crop bulletin said frosts late last week had caused light and spotty damage to this year's corn crop. However, most corn in the heavy-producing region was described as being beyond tiosl damage before the recent low temperatures occurred. Reads of 1912 Team as Class Talks Reunion When Walter W. Wood read in the Telegraph a reference to Alton High's football victory over East St. Louis High, in 1912, it was the day after a committee of his class began discussion of plans for a reunion.

Wood was captain of the 1912 football team. Known ajs "Punk," he played quarterback. Teammates included Tom Henry, Courtney Perrin, Linn Beiser, Harold Dodge, Roscoe Poole. Wood went on to star at Kansas University. He coached at Alton High, Shurtleff College and Muhlenberg College at Allentown, Pa.

He gave up coaching to go with Owens-Illinois Glass Co. and helped organize its welfare program. After retirement, he came back here from Toledo. That 1912 football team opened the season with a scoreless tie at East St. Louis.

Then, on Thanksgiving, Day, against the same team, Alton achieved a spectacular victory, 54 to 0. At the meeting in Wood's home were Clyde Schmoeller, Mrs. George Bonnell, Cecil Wlghtman, Casper Jacoby, Mrs. J. J.
