Funeral Tues, Oct. 25, 8 pm at BJ TED THACKREY Times Staff Writer I More than half a century of passionate sky-watching came to a quiet end in Glendale Sunday.

Kenneth Craig Levitt, 62, self-made weather statistician who offered his advice and facts to The Times and other Los Angeles news media over three decades, died at Memorial Hospital of Glendale after a long battle with cancer. "He fought it for four years," said his sister, Betty Goddard. "And he was still fighting and determined to win right to the end. "He fought it the way he had always watched the weather: With the wonder and faith of a child. Those who knew him understood that.

For Ken Levitt was one-of-a-kind: Years ago he told friends that he had really only three lifelong interests: religion, the weather and Deanna Durbin (the latter two, not necessarily in that order. But the fascination with weather began first "I remember when he was just 4 years old," Mrs. Goddard said, "if the wind was blowing, he would get excited; if it rained he got excited. He loved it the more violent the better." Born June 27, 1921, in Alhambra, Levitt suffered from a heart condition during his youth, and dropped out of school in his teens to become a restaurant worker before entering the Army during World War II. But he was discharged after six months and was able to work only intermittently thereafter, filling his hours with the collection of daily weather data and the self -assigned study of statistical analysis.

Levitt began telephoning newspapers and radio stations with odd weather-related facts was the second-hottest April 15 since in the early 1950s, and within a few years was a permanent fixture in the specialty he had invented for himself: He was Los Angeles' first unofficial private weather statistician. He lived on his Social Security checks, supplemented by the few dollars he was paid for the statistical service. In 1977, two of his passions suffered a near-mortal blow. Fire swept through his little apartment in Hollywood, destroying the handwritten weather records of a lifetime and his collection of Deanna Durbin records. The National Weather Service, encouraged by members of the news media, supplied him with computer printouts covering much of the statistical material he had lost but the recordings were gone forever.

"Just memories," he sighed. "But I still have those, don't The statistical reports continued to arrive as before, and he told friends he was happy enough. But a year or so later, the coughing began. Lung cancer was diagnosed, and several operations were performed. Through it all, Levitt continued to collect his data and phone it in even when his voice became almost inaudible.
