Can you imagine an island sending out a distress call to ships at sea to ome to its aid It sounds like a pipe dream, doesn't it? Yet, it happened as recently as the year 191(5. while wireless operators were still filling suc cessfully the role of adventurers in many unobserved corners of the world. It occurred the storm-swept a ters of the Caribbean Sea, where the rocky islet of Navassa rears its forbid ding headlands- out of the tropical depths. While the story of this distress call lacks the elamor and thrill which al ways surrounds one emanating from a sinking shio. it nevertheless was a I A PAGE OF PICTURE matter of serious import to the hardy adventurers who were ou the rock at the time This is the story of Navassa Island, and it is the first time it bus been told.

The island lies midway between I Hayti and Cuba, in the direct path of steamships- sailing the Isthmus of Panama.

It had been a constant menace to shipping, and in the year 1916 the United States Government decided to erect upon it a lighthouse that would warn mariners of the danger before them. Expedition Sets Sail In due' course of time the contract for the construction of this lighthouse was let. It carried with it provision for the erection of a permanent wireless telegraph station also to aid in navigation. Now it came to pass that there was one member of the nomadic army of operators hich claimed the seven seas as'its domain, cooling his hels in New York at this time. lie was Fred A.

Klingenschmidt, who had earned the sobriquet of "the trouble smoother." Hearing of the project at the time the government made its decision, he applied for the position of wireless operator to the expedition and was promptly accepted. The entire expedition, which consisted of a large number of engineers and laborers, congregated at the United States naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba, where a small three-masted stjiooner was purchased for the purpose of carrying the party and the supplies to Navassa Island. The schooner duly arrived off the shores of the little island, but for three days she sailed around it, vainly looking for a place to make a landing. After many abortive trials a landing was finally made by three or four agile laborers bo succeeded in taking with them a small piece of two by four lumber. Then by a1 persistent process of hard work, using the lumber as a small derrick, they gradually hauled up heavier booms until they were able to rig up one large enough to hoist up the supplies and other members of the expedition.

Send Frantic Calls for Aid Hunters kept the men supplied with meat by shooting wild goats, which had to be eaten the same day because of lack of storage faciPties. All the water for drinking purposes had to be carried to the island by the schooner. In the course of events oue of the terrific storms which are frequent in the tropics sweeps across the Caribbean, making physical communication with the island impossible. During the period of the storm the schooner was wrecked on the beach. The men were practically marooned.
