Wounded men of the regiment were carried in automobiles. A large negro in one of these cars stood up as it passed the reviewing stand and yelled: "If dey only gave us a little more time, Governor, we ar brought back de Kaiser and his whde blootuin' family." Another shouted: "De Rhine am a beautiful rif r. but it aiu't got anything on dis yerc Hudson." "We's all decorated," remarked another: "some wid de war cross, but; all wid a smile." The SOOth Infantry, formerly the Fifteenth New York National Guard, was the first complete regiment of negroes to go to France, during its entire stay at the front. The colors of the French war cross were carried on the flag of the regiment, which is one of the units of the United States Army thus honored.
