"I don't know how I managed last year." Tauziat, seeded second, rallied from 2-4 in the third set to beat Kournikova and advance to her 20th final.

NASCAR officials won't rule out an unprecedented midweek rule change for next Sunday's Daytona 500 They're concerned about Sutur day's lopsided first round of qualifying, in which teammates Date Jarrett and Ricky Rudd led a i'oi Taurus rout of Chevrolet Moure Carlos. Jarrett won the pole at Hltiii m.p.h., and Rudd had a lap at 190 3ii4 to lock in the front row for the Robert Yates Racing team.

Only the first two spots in the field were set. Bill Elliott was third in another Taurus at 190.319, followed by Mike Skinner in Chevrolet's best run (189.781). But no other Monte Carlo qualified higher than 16th. Both manufacturers have unveiled 2000 racing models for Speed-weeks, and Chevrolet teams began complaining during Friday's first practice that their new body design was at an aerodynamic disadvan: tage to Ford's. NASCAR chief operating officer Mike Helton was asked if he'd had an inkling there would be such disparity in Saturday's time trials.

"About 45 guys had inkled all over us in the garage area," he said. Should there be a change, it likely would be a reduction in the height, angle or 'both of the Monte Carlo's rear spoiler; Chevy teams claim too much aerodynamic drag is reducing their straightaway speeds. NASCAR has a long history of changing rules in midseason to equalize competition, but Helton said: "It would be unprecedented for us to react in the middle of an event. This event is very long, though including Sunday's Bud Shootout, several more rounds of time trials and two 125-mile qualifying races Thursday. And we're conscious of the fact that the Daytona 500 is our premier event." Then Helton waffled a bit: "To clear that up, this doesn't mean that we will react during Daytona 500 week." So did he mean the rules are locked in through the Daytona 500? "I'm not going to say we're locked in," Helton said.

"We're going to do what we need to do to keep these cars close to each other. And we've promised all the manufacturers that we'll do it in a timely manner. Nobody is more interested than we are in keeping all these makes and models equal. "We have to see how the racing goes with these new body styles." Pontiac teams, running the same body design as last year, largely were unaffected by the controversy. Ward Burton had the fastest Pontiac on Saturday, sixth at 189.633, with John Andretti eighth at 189.605.

Helton said Saturday's qualifying alone was "not enough data to be convincing to us. But we'll continue to monitor the information." Jarrett attributed winning the pole not to advantages for the Taurus, per se, but to aerodynamic tweaking of his car by crew chief Todd Parrott. It's unlikely a rule change would come in the next two days because Sunday's Bud Shootout is only 25 laps for 15 cars, and its preliminary 25-lap qualifier features only 12 cars. "But it is a good way to see cars racing," Helton said. "I can't argue with the fact that NASCAR has been successful by never saying they won't change the rules overnight," Yates said.

But if it happens this time, added, "Certainly I would cry." "From 2-4, I played great and refused to let go." Saturday's win will boost Tau-ziat's ranking to fifth, the highest of her 16-year career. "It's what I've always worked for," she said.

"As for Sunday's final, I'm not worried about Sere-, na, but I am worried about my re-, covery time." Mikael Tillstrom defeated seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-3 to advance to the Sybase Open final in San Jose, Calif. Marc Rosset beat Fabrice San-toro 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 and Roger Feder-er defeated Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-3 to create an all-Swiss final at the Marseille (France) Open. BASEBALL Griffey decides to wear dad's uniform No. 30 Along with a new team, Ken Griffey Jr. is getting a new number.

The 10-time All-Star outfielder will wear No. 30 with the Cincinnati Reds, a number previously used by his father, a former outfielder on the Big Red Machine teams of the 1970s and currently a bench coach. Ken Griffey whose son was acquired by Cincinnati from Seattle on Thursday, will switch to No. 33 this season. The number Griffey Jr.

wore in Seattle, No. 24, belongs to Reds Hall of Famer Tony Perez and will be retired. A ceremony retiring Perez's No. 24 is expected to be held sometime during the Reds' series against the Florida Marlins on May 26-28, Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said Saturday. The Reds and outfielder Alex Ochoa avoided a salary-arbitration hearing when the sides agreed on a one-year contract.

Ochoa was seeking $950,000 and the Reds had offered $775,000. He made $245,000 last year, when he hit .300 with eight home runs and 40 runs batted in in 119 games for Milwaukee. The Arizona Diamondbacks avoided salary arbitration with utility player Andy Fox, agreeing to a one-year contract.
