John Brennan, ex-pastor By Kenan Heise Tribune Staff Writer Rev. John F. Brennan, 80, pastor emeritus of St Daniel the Prophet Church, was a priest in the Chicago Catholic archdiocese for 55 years and an army chaplain during World War II.

He also had been a teacher, athletic director and vice president of Lewis University in Romeoville. A resident of St. Daniel's parish rectory in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, he died Sunday in MacNeal Hospital Berwyn. Father Brennan graduated from Quigley Seminary North and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein.

During World War II, he served as a chaplain to paratroopers in Gen. George Patton's army. Before becoming pastor of St. Daniel's, he was an associate pastor at Holy Rosary in West Pullman, St. Hugh in Lyons and Queen of Apostles in Riverdale.

On Aug. 23, 1500, Christopher Columbus was accused of mistreating natives in the West Indies, and was ordered sent back to Spain in chains. In 1630 the Massachusetts Bay Colony passed legislation setting a wage ceiling of 2 shillings a day. In 1775 British King George III proclaimed the existence of open rebellion in the American colonies. In 1869 poet and novelist Edgar Lee Masters was born in Garnett, Kan.

In 1914 Japan declared war on Germany in World War I. In 1944 Allied troops captured the port of Marseille, France, in World War II. In 1975 former Greek President George Papa-dopoulos and two officers who helped him engineer the 1967 military coup were sentenced to death by a special court. (The sentences later were commuted to life imprisonment.) In 1977 Maryland Gov. Marvin Mandel was convicted of mail fraud and racketeering after 113 hours of jury deliberations.

In 1979 Alexander Godunov, star of Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet, defected in New York, telling officials he felt "restrained in his artistic life." In 1982 Lebanon's parliament elected the leader of the right-wing Christian militia, Bashir Gemayel, as that nation's president.
