More than this, we include over 100 years of experience, our sensitive and personal attention, and the assurance that the entire service is done with respect and full recognition of Jewish law and tradition. WEINSTEIIV Menorah Chapels Gratch-Mandel Hartman-Miller 1-800-566-PWMC of the show, Edwards said. She moved to New York in 1981, where she became an Off Broadway success with her 1985 revue "Danitra Vance and the Mell-o White Boys." In it, she created a range of comic characters including a ghetto Shakespearean actress, a feminist stripper and a genteel "lesbian recruiter." Edwards said "Saturday Night offered her a different forum to display her talents. "She said it was one of the opportunities she had to actually express her thoughts about what life was like In the black community," he said. "Her stage character was a girl she named Cabrini Green.

She used that as a way of expressing herself. She believed society does not know the average person. She wanted her characters to portray the inside of an individual." Ms. Vance last appeared at the Public Theater in the spring as the guardian angel in Jose Rivera's "Marisol." After breast cancer was diagnosed in 1990, she used her experience of the illness in a performance piece called "The Radical Girl's Guide to Radical Mastectomy." In addition to Miller and Edwards, Ms. Vance is survived by her mother, Laura Vance of Chicago, and sister Latrice Lee of Markham.

York Times News Service Danitra Vance, a Chicago-born actress, performance artist and former cast member of "Saturday Night Live," died Sunday at the home of her grandfather, Clarence Edwards, in Markham. She was 5, and lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. The cause was breast cancer, 6aid her companion, Jones Miller. Once described as a cross be-Jtween Laurie Anderson and Little Richard, Ms. Vance appeared in feature films and in 1985 became the first black woman to join the regular cast of "Saturday Night Live," where she stayed for a year.

But it was through her association with George C. Wolfe, the playwright and director who is now the producer of the New York Shakespeare Festival, that Ms. Vance was best known to theatergoers. In "Spunk," Wolfe's 1990 adaptation of stories by Zora Neale Hur-ston, she demonstrated "exceptional range in playing a trio of women who are in turn worn to the bone, full of sass and aglow with innocence," wrote Frank Rich in The New York Times. Ms.

Vance received an Obie Award for her performance. Ms. Vance was born in Chicago and attended the National College of Education in Evanston; Roosevelt University in Chicago, from which she graduated with honors; Danitra Vance in 1985 and the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in Londoa Her grandfather remembered her as a bright young girl who showed an early love of the stage. "As a 5- or 6-year-old girl she would be acting in the basement before the furnace and hot water heater," Edwards said Monday. "She always wanted to act" At Thornton High School, she auditioned for a play but failed to win a part.

Nonetheless, she got up during the performance and acted anyway and became the star 1 Mil mm lifcaass msniipi i ras5riinii.iir. 5858 W. Roosevelt Chicago. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 15th Street and 59th Court, Cicero.
