Apparently, going from a Stanley Cup finalist to a non-playoff team doesn't go over well. Tube time: Speaking of Fan Appreciation Night, Saturday's regular-season finale against, Detroit already has been well publicized because of Chris Chelios' return to Chicago. Now it will be televised on Fox Sports Chicago, a rare home game on TV. The broadcast and pregame show, which starts at 6 p.m., will feature interviews with Molleken, General Manager Bob Murray and team President Bill Wirtz. As part of the postgame festivities, 20 fans will be selected to come onto the ice at the game's conclusion and receive a game-worn sweater from each of the Hawks.

UL GALAXY 7 p.m. By K.C. Johnson Tribune Staff Writer WASHINGTON In the box score and in the annals of his mind, the shot forever will be a a whistler, a Hawks 4 screamer, a blis- Canitals 2 tering slap shot capitals on which Wash, ington goalie Rick Tabaracci had no chance. In reality, Tony Amonte's career-high 42nd goal, off a wickedly good pass from Anders Eriksson, was more like a change-up that would've barely registered on a radar gun. But here's all you need to know about the shot: It went in and it won Monday's game.

"That was a rocket," Amonte said, joking. "I didn't even see it, it was so hard." The Blackhawks can afford to laugh. Amonte's power-play goal with 3 minutes 46 seconds remaining his second of the game led them to their fourth straight victory and sixth in seven games, a 4-2 triumph over the Capitals at the MCI Center. The Hawks improved to 11-6-4 under Lorne Molleken and did so with an all-around effort backstopped by goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick's spectacular third period. He finished with 24 saves and denied close-in attempts by Richard Zednik and Mike Eagles.

Eric Daze scored his fifth goal the answer. "It's unfortunate this has to end this weekend," Amonte said. "Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into next season." Take a seat: One game after scoring his first NHL hat trick, Jean-Pierre Dumont missed Monday's contest with lower back pain. Dumont isn't even sure when he suffered the minor injury, but he tested it at the morning skate and determined he couldn't play. "You don't feel pain during the games, so maybe it happened last Thursday against the Rangers," Dumont said.

"Every day, it just got a little worse and worse." Dumont, who has eight goals and 14 points in his last 17 games, is listed as day-to-day. Along with Marha and Jean-Yves Leroux, Dumont will join the Wolves for their postseason after the Hawks 'regular season concludes Saturday. He likely will take a conservative approach to returning. "I want to make sure I am ready to go for the Wolves," Dumont said. Boris Mironov, who hit his fourth post in two games, chipped in two assists and has nine in 10 games. "Players are playing to their strengths, and we're getting contributions from everybody," Molleken said. Benoit Gratton, scoring his second goal of the game, tied it at 2 at 11:11 of the second period.

The game featured only six penalties, but Matt Herr's high stick on Josef Marha led to the Hawks' final power-play chance. "Anders made a great play," Amonte said. "I never made eye contact with him, but he saw me drift toward the net and fired it right to me." Amonte one-timed the pass and, ahem, fired it past Tabaracci. Two months ago, a glance at the schedule's last road game would've provoked the question: Will the season ever end? Now the question is if the Hawks will lose again. Two games remain to discover BOXING Pacheco wins another Gloves final By Michael Hirsley Tribune Staff Writer Jorge Pacheco will make it to his fourth consecutive national Golden Gloves tournament, but his journey was nearly derailed by Josh Burrell Monday night in 'the Chicagoland Golden Gloves finals at St Andrew's Gym.

"It was a very tough fight," said the 165-pound Pacheco, representing the Aurora Boxing Club. "I've won here four times, and this is the toughest guy I ever fought." He congratulated his Villa Park opponent just outside the ring, where Burrell was credited with a knockdown in the third and final round and nearly had Pacheco out on his feet. In the near-upset, Pacheco dominated the first two rounds and had Burrell in trouble repeatedly, including two standing eight-counts in the first, before his opponent turned the tide in the third. "He was pretty tough," Burrell said. "This was my 13th fight.

I just hung in and did the best I could." His best was nearly good enough in the last round. Heavyweight Michael Bennett of the Garfield Park team, who has Olympic aspirations, was too tough for Michael Walker of the Matadors Boxing club. Referee Geno Rodriguez stopped the fight in the third round, with Bennett pursuing Walker, whom he had knocked down early in the fight and dominated throughout with solid punches to the body and head. "Body shots definitely opened it up for me," Bennett said after the bout. "I knew him from sparring, and I knew the body was his weakness.

I think I hurt him with my first body shot. I dropped him with a left hook to the body, then brought it up to the head." Although Bennett is looking forward to the Golden Gloves national tournament and competing for the U.S. Olympic team and anticipating a rematch with Malik Scott, who defeated him in earlier Olympic trials he said winning the Gloves title in his Chicago hometown was fun: "It's kind of nice to fight in front of a home crowd." In a scrappy battle between boxers from the same Teamsters-sponsored club, Oscar Arellano defeated Daniel Escudero on points to become the 119-pound open division champion. Winners in the open division advance to the Golden Gloves national finals May 10-15 in Syracuse, N.Y. In the novice division, the first-year Cicero Recreation Center Boxing Club celebrated victories by all three of its finalists Monday.

They were Carlos Loza at 165 pounds, Javier Ruiz in the heavyweight division and Israel Morales in the 147-pound senior novice division. The Chicagoland finals conclude Tuesday. Bouts begin at 7:30 p.m., at St. Andrew's Gym, 1658 W. Addison St Elton Brand will announce Wednesday that he will forgo his final two years at Duke and enter the NBA draft, according to The Associated Press.

A source close to Brand, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed Monday that the sophomore center would become the first Duke player to leave school early. The school had said earlier Monday that Brand and associate head basketball coach Johnny Dawkins would hold a news conference Wednesday at the school to announce the decision. The student newspaper at Duke, The Chronicle, also reported Monday that sopho HOCKEY Flyers' Lindros gets to go home Flyers center Eric Lindros was released from a Philadelphia hospital Monday, four days after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from his chest cavity. Lindros left the University of Pennsylvania facility Monday morning, said Dr. Larry Kaiser, a chest surgeon who performed the operation.

"He looks great; he's certainly feeling 100 percent better than he felt the other day," Kaiser said. Kaiser had removed a blood clot that was pressing against the lower lobe of Lindros' right lung, keeping it from fully expanding. Lindros, 26, underwent the surgery after suffering a setback in his recovery from a collapsed lung. The Dallas Stars will begin the playoffs without right wing Pat Verbeek, who will miss at least one to two weeks with a strained knee. l' Jf HH' in more point guard William Avery had decided to apply for the draft.

Another source said freshman Corey Maggette remains undecided about his future, The Chronicle said. Fresno State guard Courtney Alexander, who transferred from Virginia in 1997 after being convicted of beating his fiance, said he will play his senior season for coach Jerry Tarkanian, who gave him his "second chance." Matt Doherty's debut as Notre Dame coach will be in the Preseason NIT in November. It will be Notre Dame's third appearance in the preseason tournament.
