Born inAk- ron, May 23, 1921, she was alife- long resident of Firestone Park until moving to Copeland Oaks tirement Community in Sebring, Ohio, two years ago.She wasa graduate of Garfield High School (1939) and the University of Akron with a degree. A retired teacher, she had taught in Ellet, Coventry, Hartville, and the Akron school systems.

After retiring from teaching she became the private secretary for Mrs. James G.Robert- son. She was also an independent tour agent for the Anderson Bus Co. She was the author of History of Firestone in 1986. She was very active in her church and community.

She served Firestone Park United Methodist Church in many roles, including lay delegate to the Annual Conference in Lakeside, Ohio, at the district level of the United Methodist Women, and on many committees through the years. She (along with her sister, Lois Finley) wasinstru- mental in starting the Firestone Park AARP chapter; she wasinter- ested in genealogy, also. An avid traveler, she had traveled extensively worldwide, and had been to all 50 states and on five continents. She was somewhat of an unheralded pioneer for she was employed when many women work, she changed careers when many women have, and she provided for herself and the family totally independently. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Lewis (Dave) Paola; grandchildren, David and KathleenPaola; cousins, and many friends.

Born Sept. 4, 1942, in Tiro, Ohio, to Howard andEvelyn (Faust) Pfleiderer, she had been a Shelby area resident the majority of her life. She had recently been a resident of Bath Manor in Akron, Ohio.

A 1960 graduate of Tiro High School, she was a 1994 graduate of the University of Akron, where she served as a tutor for the English Language Institute. Marlene loved the peace and beauty found in nature, andcap- tured her appreciation for creation on canvas as anaccom- plished artist. Her lifelong passion was serving others as a friend and mentor, sharing her wisdom and love of life through acts of graciousness and kindness, honoringChrist, and serving her family and community. She embraced the uniqueness found in all humanity and worked to create understanding across cultural barriers. Her loving hands were blessed and gifted painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidering beautiful keepsakes for her family and friends.

She found great joy in gardening and nurturing life in all its wondrous forms. She was a true Renaissance woman, pursuing her intellectual growth andspiritual growth with great passion. Marlene was beautiful in all ways; her smile put people at ease, and her loving nature touchedthe hearts of many. Her greatest legacy in her dedication was as a loving mother and grandmother. Purvis CUYAHOGA FALLS Melville H. Purvis, 86, passed away Jan. 6, 2002. Mr. Purvis was born in Toronto, Canada, and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls for45 years, moving there from Canada.

He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, and worked as a tool and die maker for the Ford Motor retiring with 25 years of service. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cuyahoga Falls. Preceded in death by sisters, Grace Vokey and ThelmaDavies, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helena; daughter, Judith Helene (Lee) Sudmeier ofLaFay- ette, son, Robert Melville (Donna) Purvis of Ellet; grandchildren, Sharon Marie Purvis, Stacie Lee Purvis, Shannon Sudmeier, and Joseph Sudmeier; sister, Berniece Robert Purvis, both of Ontario; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mr.Williams was a sportswriter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer for 60 years, and a radio sportscaster for WINW, WHOF, WOIO, WQIO, WRCW.

During Mr. career he was recognized by several organizations for hisoutstanding work. The organizations thatpre- sented him with awards includethe Canton Jewish Center Hall ofFame, College of Wooster Hall of Fame, Canton Amateur Hall of Negro Oldtimers Athletic Association, Greater Canton Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Canton Class A Baseball Association, Syrian Lebanese BowlingAssociation, American Bowling Congress, McKinley High School Football Hallof Fame, Vince Shupe Memorial Award, Canton GoldenGloves, Eastern Ohio Basketball Officials, Canton Slow Pitch League, and the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. Preceded in death by her parents, and by sister, Margaret, she is survived by godson, Shahe Calhoun of Akron; brother, Thaddeus Mosley of Pittsburgh, sisters, Orvetta (Kenneth) Ward of Amherst, N.Y., Corliss (Merle) Woodlee of Englewood, special niece, Marlea (Kenneth) Brown of Canton, Ohio; a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m., at Rhoden Memorial Home, 1101 Palmetto with Rev. Dr.L.C. Cooper officiating.
