Casey was so much more determined than I to help others. edi every day or every week, but when we talked, we really talked about things that mattered about how we were both blessed to have tremendous wives about how we could not afford to slip up; about how we were one drink or one click of a computer mouse from losing all od gave us. eencouraged each other, especially Casey telling me how he admired what I did in jail ministry twas only in the final few months of his life that I realized how much more he did.

I knew he was associated with Recovery esources but I never realized how that extended from very public fundraising to very private meetings and calls with addicts. nthe day he received the word that he had only six months left he spent time on the phone dealing with a close friend who was helping a heroin addict. He never wanted to work anywhere else but here, with the teams he had followed as a kid.I n1994 took over for Ne vChandler as the radio voice of the rowns twas his dream job, but it was the re- sult of a nightmare: the death of handler from colon cancer. handler was enormously popular oleman was a close friend of Bill elichick rowns coach whom many rowns fans loathed in the early 1990 and he was criticized for that relationship. asey truly was in a no win position made even worse when the Browns moved in 1995 to Ba l- timore enever backed away from elichick and they remained close friends until asey final day often speaking on the phone after Belichick moved to ewE ngland to coach the atriots asey went into alcohol rehabilitation in 1998 and revived his career on radio, doing Tribe pre- game shows and Browns sideline reports and being the morning sports voice on WTAM.

ut those are just words on a resume a summation of a career that says little about the man. I none of our last conversations asey talked about his wife of six years, Ma the love of my He talked about how his two teenage daughters, Kayla and helsea were struggling to deal with his cancer.H etalked how it hurt to know dmiss their graduations their children that he would not be there to help with their tears and fears. asey said several times never asking himself why he got cancer that many people better than it.H edi it but accepted it. ethen talked about all the cards calls and mails from people many of them complete strangers ewas convinced all their prayers were keeping him alive and that he tfeel worthy of all the attention. I nthe last years of his life, Casey Coleman wanted to be a good man to do a solid job and to serve others ewas just that, and so many of us will miss him.
