of Resurrection Gloria S. Taylor, passed away March 25, 1999, Florence Wachowski, nee Satka, beloved wife of mother of Fern and Julie the late Stanley A. Wachowski; loving mother of Restaurateur Louis Mitchell, 90 Lou Mitchell's was known for its hearty breakfast of double-yolk eggs, fresh-baked sweet rolls and fluffy, oversized pancakes. As famous as the restaurant was the man who helped make it worldrenowned: Louis W. Mitchell, a restaurateur who handed out Milk Duds to his is women customers and served doughnut holes to all who waited in line for a table.

His father, William, started the restaurant in 1923. Thirteen years later, after working as a shoe salesman, Mr. Mitchell partnered with his father and helped build the business into a city must-see. Mr. Mitchell, 90, died at his River Forest home Sunday of complications from pneumonia.

The restaurant, at 563 W. Jackson became a favorite haunt for motorists on Route 66, when that highway was still popular. The eatery became a city legend that combined the luxury of homecooking with Mr. Mitchell's personal, gregarious charm. He always remembered his customers' names and occupations, and often lent them a hand.

"He treated everybody royally," said his sister Demetra Payne. "He made no exceptions. He was exuberant in what he did, he had a lot of life in him." His restaurant became a gathering place for the city's elite and where Rich Melman, Arnie Morton and the Berghoffs often started their day, said his nephew Nick Noble, who ran the business with his uncle until it was sold in 1992. Politicians from mayors to them to save some money for their child's education. Learning was a mission for Mr.

Mitchell, who never stopped thirsting for knowledge. He had to learn something each day, said his grandnephew, Peter Apostol. "He was a man who had a lifelong dedication to wisdom," Apostol said. "He instilled in me the importance of reading. He was a very deep thinker." He was on the board of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and was a major supporter of the Hellenic Foundation, the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, the United Hellenic American Congress and Rush- Presbyterian-St.

Luke's Medical Center. "He was the most generous person there said his niece Lola Payne Williams. "He was a gentleman and he'd give you his shirt off his back." Mr. Mitchell retired from his restaurant in 1988. During his career he rejected offers to franchise his restaurant, making the downtown Lou Mitchell's the only eatery by that name.

"He didn't believe in leaving that store," Noble said. "That store was special, he said, run by us and for the customers." He also is survived by another sister, Pauline Kavis; and another niece, Alexandra George Apostol. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Galewood Chapels, 1857 N. Harlem Chicago; and at 9:30 a.m.

Jimmy Carter visited in 1994, and Noble said Dwight Eisenhower also ate there. Commodities traders, lawyers and real estate developers, along with a few judges, made the eatery part of their routines.

But Mr. Mitchell was as attentive to average customers as to celebrities. When a woman came into his restaurant frantically looking for transportation to a late appointment, he handed her the keys to his Cadillac, Noble recalled. She returned with the car and he took her to the airport to catch her flight. "He had optimism--total, absolute optimism," Noble said.

"He believed in people." For pregnant customers, Mr. Mitchell fashioned a special gift, a coin in a velvet bag. He would hand it to the women and tell "He started out with the Chicago Bears in 1947," said his daughter, Susan Fox Larkin. He was with the team until 1978. Dr.
