C12 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Monday, November 14, 1994 Death Notices Obituaries First Israeli tourists welcomed in Jordan R. A. Biswanger, 99, retired teacher and avid traveler Europe. He studied and taught at the Goethe Institute at Kochel-am-See, Bavaria, where he mastered German. At the University of Barcelona, he took classes in Spanish and Spanish culture, and was' awarded an honorary doctorate of humanities degree in 1967.

When not in sckool, Mr. Biswanger traveled. He drove several times from Portugal to Scandinavia and from England to Bulgaria. For 18 years, he had his own car, a Volkswagen, kept for him during the winter months by a friend who owned a service station in Bavaria. Mr.

Biswanger's health was good throughout his life. He was about 5-foot-8, weighed 154 pounds, and had the strength, wiry build and energy of an athlete, By Dan Perry ASSOCIATED PRESS AQABA, Jordan The first busload of Israeli tourists crossed into Jordan yesterday, hoping to make friends in a land until recently considered an enemy. "Welcome to Jordan. Now we have peace and can visit each other like good neighbors. It's a great moment," said Abdullah Jaber.

a Jordanian tour guide who hupped on the bus at the border. The 35 pioneer Israeli tourists broke into hearty applause. "It's like a dream come true," said Yoram Eden, an accounting professor from Herzliya. Historic significance overtook bureaucratic procedures at the Jordanian border terminal. Colleagues gathered to watch a Jordanian policeman stamp the Israeli passports.

"It's the first time, you know," the- officer said with a bfg smile. A currency clerk, asked whether he could change Israeli shekels for Jordanian dinars, answered, "Not yet, but soon." The travelers were the first to enter Jordan with Israeli passports since the two neighboring countries signed a peace treaty on Oct. 26. Israeli passports, even Israeli visa stamps on foreign passports, were banned in the past. After a non-belligerency treaty was signed in July, Jordan opened its borders only to Israelis carrying foreign passports.

"I came to see the first Israelis. I want to tell them that we are very excited about peace," said Mu-hammed Kalifa, a mechanical engineer who had come all the way from Amman, 175 miles to the north. "It's a pleasure," border police commander Lt. Col. Abdul Rahman By Andy Wallace INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Raymond Adam Biswanger, a retired teacher and an enthusiastic traveler who spent 30 years exploring Europe and still hadn't finished, died of congestive heart failure Thursday, less than four weeks before his 100th birthday.

Mr. Biswanger, who died at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, began spending about six months of every year in Europe after the death of his wife, Jean Heffner Biswanger, in 1963, and estimated he had crossed the Atlantic more than 100 times. After a while, the airlines rewarded his dedication: "British Airways often gave him a bottle of champagne and put him in Club Class whether he paid for it or not," said his son, Raymond Adam Biswanger Jr. Age slowed him, but it couldn't keep him home. In June, with Audrey Haw-orth, his companion of more than 25 years, he spent two weeks in Morocco doing what he had been doing for the last 30 years sightseeing, making home movies and writing in his journal.

Raymond Biswanger Adam Exiled Bangladeshi author says Koran's only value is as 'history' The year before, he had visited Cyprus, and the year before that, Cyprus and Egypt. Mr. Biswanger was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast High School (for mechanical arts) and from Central (for liberal arts). He went on to the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Temple University. About 1912, he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and was at Gettysburg for the 50-year reunion of Civil War soldiers from the Union and the Confederate Armies, and took part in the re-enactment of the battle there.

His unit was activated and preparing for battle in World War 1 when the war ended. Mr. Biswanger taught school at every level. He began his career at Frances Willard, George L. Horn and John Marshall Elementary Schools.

Later, he taught at Frankford, Simon Gratz and South Philadelphia High Schools. After retiring in 1955, he went right back to the classroom, teaching social science in the evening school at Drexel Institute (now Drexel University) until 1962. After that, his schooling was in said as he shook hands with the arriving Israelis. The focus of the two-day tour is the ancient city of Petra, the rose-red capital of the Nabateans that dates back more than 2,000 years. For many Israelis, Petra symbolized the Jewish state's isolation from the rest of the region.

Dozens of Israeli youths tried to sneak across the desert border to Petra as a test of courage. A Hebrew song, "The Red Rock," which glorified one officer's secret journey, was banned from state radio. Despite the friendliness, a three-car police escort pulled behind the bus as it headed for Petra, and at least three soldiers or police officers were positioned at every intersection along the route. The Israeli tourists were warned not to speak Hebrew in loud voices or to wear T-shirts with Hebrew slogans while in Jordan, where Islamic militants strongly oppose the peace agreement with Israel. Tour leader Moshe Hananel said he had brought only 35 people on the first trip, which was to return today.

He plans to bring 250 on Thursday. "We expect much of the Jordanians. I certainly hope they don't disappoint us," said Yitzhak Chesler, a tour guide from Herzliya, as he waited for his passport to be processed. "They have so much to gain in economy from the peace that I expect openness, and I hope I'll find friendship," Chesler said. Children waved at the bus as it drove by.

When it stopped on a hill, the group got a breathtaking view of the Israeli resort city of Eilat across the bay. "It's weird and wonderful to see Eilat from here," Hananel said. believe." Nasrin, 32, is to be tried in absentia in Bangladesh on Dec. 10 on a charge of blaspheming Islam. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.

The charge and death threats came after an Indian newspaper had quoted her in May as saying she wanted a "thorough revision of the Koran." Nasrin has said she was misquoted, but would like to see changes in Islamic law to protect women's rights. A Bangladeshi court ordered her arrest in June. After two months in hiding, Nasrin surrendered and was freed on bail. On Aug. 9, she fled to Sweden.

Fundamentalists, who put a bounty of $5,000 on her head, have demanded that Nasrin be hanged for insulting the Koran. President Jose Eduardo dos Santos were expected to arrive in Lusaka today, according to a government source who spoke on condition of anonymity. Rebel leader announces cease-fire in Sri Lanka ASSOCIATED PRESS COLOMBO, Sri Lanka The leader of the Tamil Tiger rebels announced a unilateral cease-fire hours after the inauguration of Sri Lanka's new president. In a message broadcast Saturday over the Tigers' clandestine radio station, rebel leader Velu-pillai Prabhakaran said the guerrillas should retaliate only if attacked, military intelligence officials said. More than 34,000 people have been killed in the Tamil Tigers' 11-year war for a separate nation in the north and east of this island off the tip of India.

Tamils, who make up about 3 million of the country's 17 million people, accuse the majority Sinhalese of discrimination. Chandrika Kumaratunga, the former prime minister who won Wednesday's election with 62 percent of the vote, has pledged to end the war. "We will continue our quest for peace, recognizing that the path is a difficult and tortuous one," Kumaratunga said after taking the oath of office Saturday. A Siberian tiger kills its keeper at British zoo REUTERS LONDON A Siberian tiger killed a keeper at a British zoo yesterday in front of two horrified visitors, police and zoo officials said. Trevor Smith, 33, was about to clean the tiger enclosure at the How-letts zoo park in Bekesbourne, southern England, when a male tiger pounced on him and bit his neck.

It was the third time since the 1980s that a keeper had been killed by tigers at the zoo, owned by British millionaire John Aspinall. Just two months ago, his son said, Mr. Biswanger took and passed a physical exam and vision test that allowed him to keep his Pennsylvania driver's license. est a 7. ASSOCIATED PRESS SYDNEY, Australia A Bangladeshi feminist writer under a death threat from Islamic fundamentalists says the Koran's only value is as a historical book. Taslima Nasrin has lived in exile in Sweden since August, after fundamentalists put a bounty on her head for questioning Islamic doctrine. In an interview broadcast yesterday on Australian television, Nasrin said she believed that Sharia, the Islamic religious law, should be removed, and that the only value of the Koran was as a historical document. "It is out of place and out of time.

We should keep it as a historical book," she said. In response to a suggestion that her comments would insult fundamentalists, Nasrin said: "As a human being I have right to speak what I World in Brief 3 who hijacked airplane in Algeria give up in Spain ASSOCIATED PRESS PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain -Three hijackers who forced an Algerian airliner to land in Spain and threatened to blow it up with 35 people aboard surrendered yesterday after an eight-hour standoff. There were no injuries, and the "bomb" turned out to be a box containing a coffee grinder, airport director Pedro Meaurio said. The Air Algerie Fokker-27 turboprop plane was flying from Algiers to the southern Algerian city of Uargla when it was diverted to this Spanish island in the Mediterranean, Meaurio said. All of the passengers were believed to be Algerian.

The identities of the hijackers were not immediately released. The hijackers had demanded that Algeria's military-installed govern-' ment release political prisoners and hold elections demands similar to those of anti-government Islamic guerrillas. News reports said the hijackers asked for political asylum as a condition for surrendering. Angolan rebel leader expected to truce ASSOCIATED PRESS LUSAKA, Zambia Zambian officials pressed ahead yesterday with plans to host the signing of an Angolan peace treaty after receiving assurances from rebel leader Jonas Sa-vimbi that he would sign the truce. Savimbi's participation had been in doubt after government overran his rebel headquarters at Huambo last week.

The government attack threatened U.N.-mediated efforts to end 19 years of civil war. Savimbi's UNTTA rebels seemed to have conceded that with their defeat at Huambo, their best chance of salvaging any power is the peace treaty, scheduled to be signed in the Zambian capital tomorrow. Both Savimbi and Angolan Memorial services for William Roger Thompson will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kirk Nice Funeral Home, Germantown Avenue and Washington Lane. Mr.
