Hernandez said Saturday his back is still a little sore. Pavano to have MRI Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano will return to Minneapolis today to have an MRI on his sore right shoulder. Pavano is 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 11 starts this season, but hasn't won a game since May 4, going 0-3 with an 8.25 ERA in his last five outings. The 36-year-old had his shortest start of the season Friday against the Indians, allowing seven runs and nine hits in 3 innings. Around the bases The Toronto Blue Jays claimed righthander Chris Schwinden on waivers from the New York Mets.

The Blue Jays also designated right-hander Daniel Farquhar for assignment. Schwinden, 25, made two starts and one relief appearance for the Mets this season, going 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA. The Baltimore Orioles acquired outfielder-first baseman Steve Pearce from the New York Yankees for cash. Pearce, 29, was hitting .321 with 11 home runs and 30 RBI for the Yankees' Triple-A team. The Orioles designated infielder-outfielder Bill Hall for assignment.

Associated Press Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Contreras tore a ligament and a tendon in his right elbow and will probably miss the rest of the season. Contreras was injured Friday. An MRI scan Saturday snowed he tore his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator tendon. Contreras, 40, had right elbow surgery last year. He was 1-0 with a 5.27 ERA in 17 games this season.

Pedroia swings bat Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia took batting practice before Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the first time he's swung a bat since slightly tearing a muscle in his right thumb five days ago. Manager Bobby Valentine said the team hopes to avoid putting Pedroia on the disabled list. His status will be reevaluated after the weekend. Pedroia is hitting .295 with five homers and 21 RBI.
