6-C Tuesday, May 31, 1988 The Philadelphia Inquirer Vermeil on Vermeil: Tm not an actor' TV tonight By GAIL SHISTER Tjyradio" By David Bianculli CBS, NBC and ABC are saddling viewers with wall-towall repeats tonight except for an ABC Liza Minnelli special that's somewhat Intriguing, but also somewhat disappointing. The best bet is Bill Movers' continuing conversation with mythologist Joseph Campbell on PBS and, if you have access to cable, a repeat of the classic East of Eden on the USA Network. The Dark Crystal (8-9 p.m., Ch. 10) Part of 2. This moody 1982 movie from Muppet creators Jim llcnson and Frank Oz is being shown in two parts (concluding tomorrow night), more to cover CBS's weaknesses at 8 p.m.

than to Henry Bonilla, formerly assistant news director at Channel 29, are expecting their second child on Christmas Eve. Daughter Alicia just turned 3. Although she and Bonilla are happy as clams to be back in their native Texas she anchors and he produces at KENS-TV in San Antonio she is experiencing a major culinary roadblock in the Lone Star State. "I have such a craving for fresh bagels, but they've never even heard of them down here," moans Knapp Bonilla, 33. "They're about as common as burritos are in Philadelphia.

Help!" Rainbows. Syndicated talker Phil Donahue's telecast from New York's famed and recently refurbished Rainbow Room airs today at 9 a.m. on Channel 6. It's the first time that a TV show has originated from the historic supper club, on the 65th floor of NBC's Rockefeller Plaza headquarters. Performing celebs include Mary Martin, who first played the room 50 years ago, and pianist Michael Feinstein, who played at the room's December Donahue's wife, Mario Thomas, even pops up for a quick twirl around the dance floor to "Isn't It Romantic?" (Sigh!) The dolled-up Donahue audience consists of those who had tickets to previous Donahue shows that had to be canceled.

Nice touch. Short stuff. Linda Yellen (Playing for Time) and Nancy Bein will produce a CBS flick based on the life of Liberace. The late -entertainer's manager of 45 years, Seymour Heller, is serving as consultant. No cast yet.

ABC and Paramount have commissioned Oscar-winning screenwriter Stirling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) to produce and write "a two-hour pilot for a new Impossible series to begin next season. Laugh-a-minute Peter -Graves and other members of original CBS cast (1966-73) are --expected to reprise their roles. -Jay Tarses, creator of NBC's ill-fated Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, on -the top-rated Peacock: "They have -'No. 1' parties over there. They put on their devil outfits and dance around a bonfire and throw people with college educations into a pit or something." If anybody knows Dick Vermeil, it's Dick Vermeil.

"1 tend to always be overprepared," says the tightly wound former Eagles coach, dumped by CBS Sports after five years as an NFL analyst. One of the raps against Vermeil: Overpreparation killed his spontaneity. "When I made a statement on the air, it was correct," says Vermeil, 51. who earlier this month signed a three-year deal with ABC Sports as a college-football color man. Gary Bender does play by play.

"It wasn't based on opinion or superstition, but on actual fact and 23 years of coaching experience. "I don't think it ever interfered with my presentation of the game. Nobody in an administrative position at CBS ever made a critical comment to me about it I can only respond to what I see on the field. To be I'd have to be an actor, and I'm not an actor." Vermeil's ABC contract requires him to do 20 events six of them non-sports a year. (It also provides an "out," should he get an NFL coaching job.) Last evil Joseph Campbell discusses good, and eternity on Channel 12 at 10 p.m.

season, Vermeil did four college games for CBS. including the Gator Bowl. He prefers the pros. "ABC offered me the lead college job two years ago, but I stayed with CBS out of loyalty and out of staying in the NFL," Vermeil says. "I enjoyed my years with CBS.

I turned down opportunities for a lot more money than I was making as a coach. "The only thing I'm bitter about is how it was handled at the very end. I learned that from now on, I'll make decisions about my career based on my own personal feelings, not on what other people say I hope ABC really likes my work and I like ABC. If those two things happen, chances are I'll never coach again." On another note, does Cadillac pitchman Vermeil really drive one? "I did until I moved to the farm," he says, referring to his 100-acre spread in Chester County. "Now I drive a Jeep." What's in a name? As of tomorrow, WTAF-TV changes its call letters to WTXF.

And TAF sports director Howard Eskin, for one, isn't happy about it. "People outside the city know us as WTAF, not Channel 29," says Humble Howard, a Channel 3 alum. "I don't want people to think I've changed stations again. I even thought of petitioning the FCC to stop it, but it wouldn't do any good. I just don't like change." TVX Broadcasting Inc.

bought Channel 29 from Taft Communications Inc. in April 1987. Baby boom. Channel 10 exile Deborah Knapp Bonilla and hubby present this film in the best possible manner. CBS repeat Beach Blanket Bingo (8-10 p.m., Ch.

29) Yes, that's Linda Evans of Dynasty in this 1965 movie, as the girl who tries to steal Frankie Avalon from Annette Funicello. Her character's name is Sugar Kane, which is kind of sweet: From Sugar to Krystle, Evans' career has been somewhat elemental. Moonlighting (9-10 p.m., Ch. 6) Gary Cole of Fatal Vision guest stars, but the man to watch, once again, is guest star Mark Harmon, in the third of his appearances as Sam, The Man That Got Away. ABC repeat.

Liza Minnelli in Sam Found Out. A Triple Play (lo-n p.m., Ch. 6) Here's the deal: Minnelli gets to play three roles in as many one-act plays, written by different collaborators and based on the same four opening lines (of which the key ones are "What's wrong?" and "Sam found The first playlet, a drama written by Lanford Wilson, stars Ryan O'Neal as a pimp who abuses and embraces Minnelli's strung-out prostitute. The second playlet, a fantasy by Terrence McNally and Wendy Wasserstein, stars Lou Gossett as a klutzy dance student of Minnelli's whose method of courtship is literally regal. The final playlet, a mini-musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, stars John Rubinstein as a man whose romance with Minnelli is thwarted by man's best friend.

All three are directed by Piers Haggard, whose experience on the Pennies From Heaven mini-series makes him most effective in the latter two segments. Each playlet is better than the one before it, and some of the Kander-Ebb lyrics are very funny, but Triple Play is more successful at being different than at being excellent Nice try, though. ABC Moyersi Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth (lO-ll p.m., Ch. 12) Part 2 of 6. Even though this is the second hour in this outstanding six-part series, it's the one that begins at the beginning or, more precisely, at the beginnings.

Bill Moyers and Campbell start the hour by trading lines from the creation stories of different cultures and religions, then move from there to analyze the universal interpretations of good, evil and eternity. This makes for a spellbinding, and inspirational, TV series. VCR alert.
