He grandfather said of himself he was a simple man who sought life's and not its maternal rewards. He believed and behaved by the principle that caring for and helping people is part of the reason we are here. He was more than the sum of each of his roles. In whatever he did, he was a human. He had an endless well of love for his wife, brother, sons and their families as well as his friends.

He dedicated his life to others in his everday actions and his teaching. A former student of his once wrote to him, "Mel, please keep teaching the is effective because you set free an energy and message that creates a better world for kids and people in general." Obituaries Melvin Kramer of Cherry Hill, educated a generation of teachers By S. Joseph Hagenmayer INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Melvin Kramer, 62, whose love for people and respect for learning were hallmarks of his 28 years as an associate professor of education at Glassboro State College, died Tuesday at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in Camden. Mr.

Kramer, a resident of Cherry Hill, retired from Glassboro State College (now Rowan College) in 1991. He taught at Jersey City State College for one semester before being hired at Glassboro in 1963. "He was among the most humanistic and supportive teachers I've ever met," said Marion Rilling, a Rowan professor of education who started teaching there the same year Mr. Kramer arrived. "He had a genuine love for people and a deep respect for learning.

His former students must be among the best teachers in South Jersey." Mr. Kramer was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Philadelphia, where he graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1949. After spending one year at Pennsylvania State University, he transferred to Temple University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in. 1953, his master's in 1959 and his doctorate in 1973. At Temple, he was a member of the Kappa Phi Kappa Honor Society and Pi Gamma Mu, an academic excellence society.

Mr. Kramer started teaching English and social studies at South Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1953. He moved to Huntingdon Junior High School in Abington from 1957 to 1962, then to Abington High School in 1962-63. "He loved people and loved helping them to learn," said Marlene Klein Kramer, his wife of 47 years. "He thought that self-esteem was critical to a child's success in education and tried to instill that feeling into all of his students." A former college student once urged Mr.

Kramer in a letter to "keep teaching the message it is effective because you set free an energy and message that creates a better world for kids and people 'in general." Mr. Kramer was a member of Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kramer is survived by sons Neil, Eric, Alan, and David; three grandchildren, and a brother. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Dirk van Zyl, heart transplant survivor By Sahm Venter ASSOCIATED PRESS CAPE TOWN, South Africa Dirk van Zyl, the world's longest-living heart transplant patient, died yesterday in a nursing home.

He was 68 and had survived with a second heart for 23 years. Mr. van Zyl recently had suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side, and his death was not caused by heart failure, according to his son, Coenie van Zyl. Dirk van Zyl received a new heart in a 1971 operation performed by the pioneering surgeon Christian Barnard. He was Barnard's sixth transplant pa- Deaths Here Robert A.

He was in the Army during World War II, serving as an officer in the Coast Artillery. He sold beer around the world at military posts in Okinawa and Japan and later in Korea and Vietnam. After he retired in 1980, he continued to work at Kasser Distillers and then held a series of part-time jobs. He moved to Ocean City from his home in Center City in 1986. He was also associate pastor at St.

Joseph Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Swarthmore and St. Joseph Church in Collingdale. He was associate director of the Catholic Youth Organization in the Southeast Delaware County District and served as chaplain at Little Flower High School. In 1977, he went to the Diocese of Dodge City, and served as hospital chaplain and then pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. He returned to Philadelphia in 1989 and was assigned as assistant pastor of St.

George H. Feulner 25, of Fish- N.B. Curtis, 23, artist, musician ASSOCIATED PRESS PROVINCETOWN, Mass. Nicholas B. Curtis, 23, son of actor Tony Curtis, has died after suffering a seizure.

Mr. Curtis was sleeping at a friend's house when he had the seizure Saturday, said Jennifer Walsh, a secretary for Tony Curtis. Nicholas Curtis also had a seizure about a month ago and was undergoing tests to, determine the cause, Walsh said. State Police Trooper Paul White said no foul play was suspected. He said emergency workers responded early Saturday to a report of someone choking.

Mr. Curtis was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m. He lived on Cape Cod and was a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. A keyboard musician and artist who painted and drew in all mediums, he also wrote poetry and had minor parts in some films. He was the son of Tony Curtis' third wife, Leslie, who lives in Dennis, Mass.

Smith, 80, who advised four presidents on nuclear and disarmament issues, died of cancer Monday at Easton Memorial Hospital in Maryland. Mr. Smith was director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency during the Nixon administration and chief U.S. negotiator for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks from 1969 to 1973. He was ambassador at large for nuclear nonproliferation in the Carter administration and also served in the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.

President Jimmy Carter gave him the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. Mr. Smith is credited with coming up with the idea of establishing special hotline between Moscow and Washington to lessen the chances an accidental nuclear confrontation. Mr. Smith was born in New York City and graduated from Yale Unt versity and Yale Law School.
