The deal should come down this week. WTAF-TV news director Roger LaMay isn't talking, but he's very close to signing Thomas to a two-year pact as a general-assignment reporter, beginning next month. Thomas, 34, has been working at Channel 10 without a contract since his three-year agreement expired Oct. 15. WCAU-TV general manager Steve Cohen says he wants to keep Thomas and has offered him a three- to five-year contract.

But Cohen is also prepared to allow Thomas to continue working at the CBS-owned station without a contract "for as long as he wishes." "Charles is a fine correspondent," Cohen says. "He's a good, strong reporter. He knows what he's doing and he handles himself well across the board. We're aware that he has other offers. We want to keep him right here." Cohen says he has more than matched Channel 29's offer.

He also denies reports that CBS has placed a ceiling on salaries in a cost-cutting effort. "I have total control of the budget for payment of on-air people," Cohen says. "I have leeway in how I manage it." Since the signing of big fish Howard Eskin of Channel 3 in October, LaMay has gotten calls from some of the more established TV reporters in town. At least at the negotiating table, LaMay is proving he can compete with the Big Boys.

"Book 'em, Dan-O" The evil Wo Fat is on the prowl again, and the good guys at Hawaii Five-0 are going after him. Five-Oh boy! Jack Lord, who played iron-haired Steve McGarrett on CBS's Hawaii Five-0 (1968-80), will star in Hawaii Five-0 Revisited, a CBS movie about the elite police force. Joining him will be James MacAr-thur as his trusted sidekick, Danny Williams, and Khigh Diegh as Wo Fat, McGarrett's archenemy since the pilot. In Revisited, McGarrett has retired from the force and is holding a federal job in Washington; Dan-0 is his successor. Filming begins in February.

Foley Square star Margaret Colin has put her foot down on "date of the week" scripts for her new CBS sitcom. (Now that takes nerve, particularly for a prime-time unknown on a show that's not exactly setting Lord Nielsen on his ear.) In the Foley Square premiere, Colin's character, an unmarried assistant district attorney, advertised for dates in a personal column. Last week's episode saw her new boyfriend dump her because of her demanding hours. "I've already told the producers I don't want the series reduced to stories about who Alex is dating," Colin says. "We have a gold mine's worth of stories in the D.A.'s office, and that's what we should be exploring." Gerald McRaney (Simon Simon) will direct an episode of the CBS series early next month, and is also writing a segment about a Vietnam vet suffering from post-traumatic-stress syndrome.

Knots Landing flash: Look for unhappily married Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) to take a lover soon. Channel 3 sports director Howard Eskin will work his final KYW-TV newscast on Jan. 10. His tentative start date at Channel 29 is Feb. 17.

June Carter Cash will play the mother of Frank James (played by her real-life husband, Johnny Cash) in The True Story of Jesse and Frank James, an NBC movie now in production. Three-time Academy Award-winner Michel Legrand will compose the score for Crossings, the six-hour ABC mini-series to air in February. Chester's WCZN-AM (1590), formerly known as WQIQ, has changed its format from adult contemporary to country. Quote-board: Charlton Heston, who played Michelango in The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965), on his role in ABC's The Colbys: "It's interesting to be in a place where you wear a tie and don't have to lie there and paint the Sistine Chapel."
