Times Society Editor NEW YORK-It was 75 years ago that Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt drove up Fifth Avenue in a horse-drawn carriage with a group of friends to register as the first guests at the new Plaza Hotel. Now grown old gracefully, looking very much as it did then, the hotel celebrated its 75th anniversary with a party. Thursday night about 400 guests, many of them pillars of New York's upper crust, arrived at the same Fifth Avenue entrance where there was parked a contemporary of the hotel a white 1907 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Trumpets blared.

The long red carpet extended up the stairs, through the lobby, the Palm Court (where some people still lingered over pastries and oolong or Earl Grey tea) and onto the Terrace Room. There the evening's chairman, Mrs. Vincent Astor, was receiving guests at a champagne reception, where, besides the usual hors d'oeuvres, hot soup was served. Some more of the city's grandes dames Mrs. John Barry Ryan, every strand of her short marcelled hairdo perfectly in place; Estee Lauder (with her husband Joe); Lily Auchincloss-, Mrs.

Melville W. Hall (she's one of the Annenberg sisters) in black point d'esprit; Marietta Tree; sculptor Louise Nevelson, wearing a red-fox hat were holding court in various parts of the room. Arnold Palmer, the golfer; John Carl Warnecke, the architect; Henry Geldzahler, the city's cultural commissioner-, John Coleman, the hotel man (he was with his fiancee Virginia Regan), and Henry Grunwald, the editor, attracted more attention. Another flourish of trumpets announced the arrival of New York's Mayor Ed Koch.
