be Arizona Haifa Star Tucson, Sunday, October 1, 1 By Tom Turner The Arizona Daily Star In the continuing Las Vegas one-up resort competition, the Stratosphere Corp. will surely reign awhile when its $315 million Stratosphere Tower opens next April. The tower will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi (the world's tallest, Sears Tower in Chicago, is 1,454 feet). It might feature a $50 million aquarium at its base and a $55 million monorail linking it with downtown. It definitely will include a 300-seat revolving restaurant up top, one of five restaurants in the new development, which also will sport 1,500 hotel rooms, a casino and entertainment and retail complex, as well as a roller coaster, space-shot ride and wedding chapels.

Who will need to go anywhere else? All the construction and new resorts aren't hurting the local economy, either. State statistics show the average Nevada employee earns $24,023 a year, seventh-highest in the nation. A new $16 million addition to the Community College of Southern Nevada includes a mock casino and massive computer lab. Here's a sampling of who's playing Vegas this month: ALADDIN Oingo Boingo opens Oct. 22 through the end of the month in the Aladdin Theatre.
