Thurman, a 5-foot-3, 130-pound junior, rode key blocks by Monty Mel-cher and James Mosley down the sideline to stake the Red Raiders to a 7-0 lead 85 seconds into the game. Three minutes later, Tech quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver hit fleet flanker Wayne Walker with a 76-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 advantage. However, the Raiders (3-2 overall, 1-1 league) wound up having to preserve their victory with three interceptions, two in the final minutes.

"It was the longest game I've ever been through in my life," Tech coach Spike Dykes said. (2-2, 0-1 pulled into a 14-14 tie on a 66-yard touchdown run by Keith Woodside and a 19-yard TD burst by Darren Lewis. Tech then pulled away again.
