The partisans uproot him. And then the Nazis defoliate the earth around him. The power of Come and See principally derives from the inspired performance by Kravchenko as Florya, in what must be the ultimate loss-of-innocence role. Each brutality committed by the invading Nazis registers like psychic scars made flesh on the boy's mobile face. Since Florya is the audience's eyes and ears, we, too, are marked.

Klimov is a filmmaker whose camera bellies along the landscape in a frenzy. Yet what's most remarkable about Come and See is not its images which are fiercely graphic but Klimov's extraordinary use of sound to evoke Florya's shellshock, imbalance and disorientation. After the partisan's leave Florya behind, he tries to return home only to get caught in the fire of German paratroopers, which leaves him with a temporary loss of hearing. He's like Dondi in hell. To be able to see the bombs but not be able to hear them coming gives the audience the sense that it, too, is a casualty of war.

Like Candide abandoned in the worst of all possible worlds, Florya returns home but refuses to see that his family has been massacred, even though their corpses are heaped in stacks like hay against the barn. Because Klimov subtly forces us to identify with Florya, we slowly become Florya his furrowed and "Come and See" focuses on a boy's loss of innocence during the Nazi onslaught. By Carrie Rickey hupdm Movfe Clitic The devastating Come and See chronicles the Nazi siege of Byelorussia during World War II. As combat movies go, this is a film of such gut-wrenching brutality that by contrast Platoon looks like a sandbox scuffle. Directed by the gifted Soviet filmmaker Elem Klimov, the severely beautiful Come and See begins in 1943, as the Nazis begin to advance into the Soviet republic.

Foraging through the rubble of battle, two boys play war games in a pine barren. Their objective is to dig up rifles that might have been buried with Soviet soldiers. One of the boys is Florya (Alexei Kravchenko), a 14-year-old whose milky face is innocent of the horrors of war. In fact, when he unearths a rifle, he trembles with fear at the thought of actually using it to kill. When his mother finds that he's toting the rifle, she boxes his ears.

He's too young to fight. And besides, if he does, the Nazis will probably retali- Olga Mironova and Alexei Kravchenko in "Come and See." ate against the family, perhaps killing Florya's two young sisters. Partisan soldiers come to their farmhouse and, despite his mother's protests, whisk Florya to their camp. They are not playing games. But they soon realize that Florya is not soldier material.

He's too young and too unworldly to understand the enormity of the situation. What the Nazis are doing to Jews and Poles in extermination camps, they also are doing to Byelorussians in their own villages: burning them alive because "inferior races carry the microbe of communism." Though he's drafted by the partisans and equipped with a rifle, the boy-child Florya is unequipped to deal with war. On sentry duty he fails to demand the password, so he's not much practical use to the partisans. This stripling, like a young wails and screams of those being incinerated. We learn from a subtitle that the Nazis thus immolated the townspeople of 683 Byelorussian villages, butchering more than 100,000 with sadistic glee.

The final scene of this extraordinary movie has the urgency of all that's gone before. Without revealing its conclusion, let's just say that Come and See is a most urgent document of humanism. contorted face becomes a mirror image of our horror at the bloodshed. Apart from documentary footage of the survivors of concentration camps and Hiroshima-Nagasaki, I've seen nothing so unspeakably brutal as the penultimate scene of Come and See. The Nazis storm a Byelorussian village, Perekhody, and herd the townspeople into a large barn for a "security check."
