April 25, 1987 The Philadelphia Inquirer 5-C Death of fashion designer Smith jlinked to AIDS, attorney says aSAjBs b4 i 1 I Vriiled Press International NEW YORK Award-winning fashion designer Willi Smilh died of pneumonia brought on by AIDS, the attorney for his estate said yesterday. Smith, 39, died on April 17 at Mount Sinai Hospital after being ill for about a month. His body was Monday after a funeral service. vlle died of pneumonia, but not the LJipe of pneumonia normally associat-Jft- with AIDS," said Edward Hayes, the attorney. "He had the AIDS virus, tLAiJiich suppressed his immune sys tem and reduced his ability to combat the pneumonia he contracted." A spokeswoman for the hospital had said the designer's pneumonia also was complicated by shigella, a parasitic disease that causes dysentery and severe dehydration.

Hayes said a blood test shortly before the designer's death revealed the presence of the AIDS virus. "The doctors gave him a blood test and it showed a low white blood cell Hayes said. "That made them suspicious, and they gave him an AIDS test and it came back Smith never showed symptoms of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, Hayes said. The "designer, born in Philadel-1 phia, pioneered funky "street couture" fashions and taught fashion design at the Parsons School of Design. He began his company, Williwear in 1976.

The firm last year sold $25 million worth of clothing. Its fashions are sold in more than 500 department and specialty stores in the United States, Britain and France. ASCAP was founded in New York in 1914 to assist the creators of music in licensing compositions and to ensure that users complied with the federal copyright law. director of the Center for Facial Plastic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Breitenfeld, on trumpet, and Reiter, on bass, tonight join Frederick Hammer at the piano and Bell of Pennsylvania executive Charles F. Schalch on drums in a jazz foursome they call "The Geezers." The multi-instrument Reiter (piano, guitar, trumpet, alto sax and drums) will also be at the piano to accompany vocalists Nancy Ben-diner Weiss, president of the Ben-diner Group Marvin Nadel, senior vice president of Day Zimmerman and John T. Kemp, Sun Co.

executive. Although they went into other fields, many of the unstrung heroes have continued music as an avocation. There is, for example, the jazz group, usually a quartet, called the "Reading Terminals," which plays once a month at where else? the Reading Terminal Market. Tonight it will be a quintet composed of two architects, Herman DeJong on bass and Vincent G. Kling on guitar; a Common Pleas Court judge, Richard A.

Klein, on drums; a city councilman, Edward A. Schwartz, on piano, and a doctor, Paul G. Spiro, chief resident at Abington Hospital, on flute. Klein also plays frequently in prisons in a group called "The Fifth Amendment." For all of the unstrung heroes, music is an important part of their lives. For some of them, music literally changed their lives.

Kauffman met his future wife, Patricia, at St. John's Church in Washington "the church of the presidents," on Lafayette Square across from the White House when they were soloists in the choir. Robert Sataloff, an ear, nose and throat surgeon who also teaches voice science and pedagogy at the Academy of Vocal Arts and Curtis Institute, and his wife, Dahlia, a surgeon, met when he was an intern at the University of Michigan Hospital and she was in medical school. A baritone, he was looking for an accompanist at the piano. A mutual friend brought them together.

"We met and just sort of expanded our act," said Dahlia Sataloff. Married a year later, they continue to appear together in concerts. On tonight's program, they'll be joined by baritone Richard Shapp, a cantor at Beth Or synagogue in Spring House and a public relations consultant, in a duet from Gaetano Donizetti's opera Don Pasquale. The chairman of the benefit committee is Peppi Wister. The evening will begin at 6:30 with a one-hour concert, followed by dancing and dinner, cabaret songs, and more dancing, to music provided by the Geezers and the Reading Terminals.

"As my wife said, people may want to go and have some fun, but Jiey don't want their ears abused." Doran also will participate at the piano in a quartet, playing a work by Qirelli with violinist Peter Benoliel, cjiiirman of the Quaker Chemical Qorp-. and two professionals, cellist Holesovsky and violinist Mi-baling Park. At the rehearsal, Mostovoy listened as tenor Kauffman and lutist Axel, reading from a facsimile of the original 16th-century score, went through tlie number they have planned for tha program, "I Care Not For These Indies," an Elizabethan lute song by Tjjpmas Campion. "Take a slightly faster tempo," he suggested. "Give it a little more bounce and character." s- '-Alma Cohen, wife of lawyer Sylvan lA.

Cohen, said she had been taking piano lessons in preparation for her performance, a piano duet with A. Margaret "Stormy" Bok, board chairwoman of the Curtis Institute of Music. They have been rehearsing together every day, she says: "I'm not nervous now, but I will be Saturday." "Axel and Kauffman also acknowledged having a few trepidations about tonight's performance, for which, they say, they will have practiced together at least 20 hours. Axel is-accustomed to appearing professionally before several hundred people, but, he said, "it's much more aJiKiety-provoking to play an instrument. 'Unstrung' is an apt word, especially for a lute, which is notorious pr getting itself out of tune." -The performers, says Mostovoy, are called "unstrung, because they dare it, and heroes, because they make it work." Virtually all of them studied music when they were young, some for many years.

Many majored (or minora)) in music in college. Ann Hammer, who will begin the evening with her own arrangement of "America," studied composition and piano Indiana University and has taught Siano. Her husband, Frederick S. wnmer, president and chief executive officer of the Meritor Financial Proup, took a jazz band on a European tour one summer when he was ttudying math as an undergraduate Jt Colgate.
