A bargain to close estate. H. Sidney, Godfrey, 111. During the First Half of 1924 There Have Not Been Nearly So Many Real Estate Sales in Alton as in the First Half of 1923. This has been due principally to inability of the Building and Loan Associations to furnish money to finance sales, in addition to furnishing money for the scores of new houses built by owners on lots purchased in the last year.

The factories in the Alton district have not all been running full time, and steady employment has been uncertain for many workers. As a result of this condition not so many newcomers have been moving into Alton as in previous years. Then too the national election has had its usual effect on business in general. Last month only two sections of the United States reported "good were Southern Florida, and Southern California. Naturally all these conditions have had an effect on the local real estate market.

Selling real estate has been much more difficult than for any time during the last five years. However, better days are ahead, and in fact are here now. Our good friends, the Building and Loan Associations, are gradually reducing the number of their uncompleted loans on file, and are getting in more new funds to loan, from people who realize that there is no safer investment than loans secured by first mortgage on Alton Real Estate; factories are operating more steadily, the uncertainty of the election is being discontinued, new people are coming to 'Alton. i Our own business is helping to prove this. At present we have more money to loan for private investors than we have places to put it Real Estate sales during the last thirty days total exactly can give you names, dates, and amounts if you want the information.

We want and need scores of houses, business properties, and lots on our sales list. We want your Real Estate. We advertise your property, show it to our prospects, and do our best to sell it for you at a fair price. No cost to you if we fail, and only a reasonable commission if we succeed. We attend to every detail of the sale, and help finance if necessary.

List your Real Estate for Sale with BISHOP AND WEBER. We convert Slow-Moving Properties into cash and interest-bearing mortgages in a very short time, Bishop Weber REAL ESTATE, INSURANCE, LOANS Phone 269 No. 8 East Broadway In Middletown FOR SALE rooms, modern, new roof, newly painted, in good repair throughout, level lot 50x 125 feet, paved street, 820 Spruce Street; convenient to Middletown and Union car lines. Telephone 1083 Plain Roll Roofing or Shingle Effect. Springman Lumber Co. Broadway at Cherry Phone 210 rialr bobbed at 210 Piasa, ERVOUS BEGIN HERE TODAY The "Nervous WreSk," an eccentric young easterner, drives Sally Morgan, daughter of a Montana ranch owner, a rough, uncertain trail from the ranch to the rail- road'etatlon. They run out of gasoline and the occupants of a passing car refuse to lend them any. Thn Wreck tikes gallons at the point of a gun and drives on.

Latnr they are held captive at ranch along the way because the foreman, Charlie McSwcen, noeds -UyNEA. Service lac. room while engaged In this task, bul the Underwood family was evidently up-stalrs. "Underwood?" ehe mused. "Can't say that 1 remember hearing the name around here.

Fancy cattle eh? I've heard of somebody arount here who raised prize Herefords. I'l bet It's the same one. But if it la. we're a long way trom tho Bar-M. We bavoa't any neighbors like that." xoreman, jucawcen, meuo cook, and Sally fills that need.

They There were foctstspa on the stair discover that the owner of the ranch case Is the owner of the car which they held up. McSween announces that the owner Is Mr. Underwood of New Tork, and that he and his hoy and girl expect to stay at the ranch for several weeks. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORS "His beln' from New York Is why was so particular about the cookln'. I had Chinks here last year and they did real well.

So I went and got another pair this summer; but, as I told you, the boys got kind of juvenile with 'em and they lit out. It down Into the living rooms, and Sally, with a final look at the table, fled back Into the kitchen. "They're coming down," ehe informed the Wreck. "We've got to hurry. Thank Heaven, biscuits don't take long.

Y6u keep an eye on that coffee, and don't let it boll. Stop It Just when It starts. I haven't time to cook any meat; besides, I don't know where they keep It. They're going to have an omelette." It was a very large omelette that she made, fluffy and thick, a rhap- hls spectacles, then stepped back si pace for another inspection. Her scrutiny lasted several It makes you look dlfte'rent," she said.

"Con you anything without them?" "I can see you," sold the Wreck, blinking. "Walt a minute." She ran to a closet and came bock carrying a starched white jacket. "It must have belonged to one at the Chinamen." she said, "but I think It will flt you. Put it on." She managed to get him into It, after fierce protest. Then she viewed him again.

"I really believe," she said, slowly, "that you can get away with it. With that, and the apron, and no spectacles, you don't look the least bit like a nervous, wreck. You don't look like a hold-up man, anyhow. And If you're sure you can around without folllne over things. I believe I'll let you try It But awfully, awfully careful about your voice.

Try to disguise It, If you can. Don't forget yourself and bark at them." "I never bark." "You did then. But you mustn't. Just keep remembering that still hiding out. I think they're at the table now.

You can take In the seems that a Chink expects you to tako him serious. It beats hell." "The boss must have money," suggested Sally. "Yes, ma'am; he's with it. He, raises fancy cattle, only that ain't the way he made his money. He took It from somebody In Wall Street.

But there ain't any finer cattle In Montana. They don't know how he mode his money. They don't care. I can't say that I care anything myself. I'm liberal In my views.

If I were you, ma'am, I'd sort of give 'em plenty to eat, bUi. I'd make it look as much like New York as I could." "Oh, I'll give them lots," said Sally. "Don't you worry, It slipped half way from her lips timer." It was awfully hard to play tendsrfoot when Charley was around. But Charley gave no sign that he noticed anything. "That's right, ma'am; feed 'em liberal and fancy.

I can see you're goln' to make an awful hit with the boys." He went out again, satisfied that dinner was under way and that Sally would be a credit to his discrimination in cooks. She Was flying around kitchen like a marionette on wires, attending to three or four things at once, but without least trace ot confusion. "Poke that flro lip, Henry; put a lot of wood on it and get It going. I want a hot oven. There's a pile of wood outside the door.

Fill the ket- tlo over at the sink pump nnd put It on. Ive got fifty things to do. nnd you've got to help with tome of them. Bettor put your ap on on. too; you'll get all mupMil It you don't." The Wreck went nl.out his task with a scowl.

"Tha big lying hog," he said. "I never touched their watches and valuables." "They're Just excltol," explained Sally, es she hunted for a rolling pin. "People always exaggerate. Charley doesn't suspect us. anyhow, no there's that much gained.

Don't 811 the kettle too full; it'll boll over." "I'm not. I'll be If I'd break my neck cooking them." "That's nothing. I've cooked for lots of people. Besides, we're stalling for time. We're going 10 give them tho best maal we know how." "Chinamen's work!" "It would be a good thing for us If sody In yellows and golden browns.

The Wreck eyed It with jealous dis approval, but she did not give him time to express on opinion. She had him opening a can of soup and SHE CAME BACK CARRflNQ A WHITE JACKET. pouring It Into a saucepan for heat- Ing. There was time for that much, anyhow. "I'll cook them a regular meal next time," she promised.

"But this will have to do for short notice." Her enthusiasm for tho odious task depressed him. "Don't work your head off," he advised. "You'll get no thanks for It." "Oh, I've got lots to do yet." said Sally, cheerfully. "For one thing, I've got to wait on the table." The Wreck nenrly upset the coffee pot In his anger. "You will not!" he exclaimed.

"Of course 1 will." "I'll not have you waiting on hogs, Sally Morgan. They con wait on themselves." "Don't be ridiculous. They don't eat the kitchen. Somebody's got to carry It to them." "All right, then. I'll carry It to 'cm." Sha stared, then shook her bead vehemently.

"You can't. Tou'got to dodge them us long as you can. There'll be a Chinamen," sivid Sally, i blow-up, as sure in a gun, the mln- we blandly. "Then we'd hive a complete alibi." Tie grumbled bis way ttiruugb the chores, but she could not complain that he was inefficient. Although be uecmed constantly at the point of disobedience, tho Wreck followed his onlfrn.

Ho even kept faithful eye on the stove, whllo she went Into the dining-room to set the table. She took swift peep Into the living ute they see you." "Woll, I'm going to wait on them, If anybody does," he said, doggedly. "What's the usa of dodging around? We may just as well find out now as any other time." "See here, Henry Williams! If She stopped, studied his face with a new Interest and remembered somo. thing. Reaching out, she lifted oft soup, and don't forget to serve from the left." He picked up a tray and begam navigating cautiously In the direction of the dining room.

Sally watched him anxiously. It was an awful risk, she thought; but If he passed the test she would feel a lot safer. CHAPTER DC The Four-ln-One Bandit nnHERE were two persons In J. dining room when the Wreck entered with the tray. He could make them out with reasonable clearness as be drew nearer to them.

was the girl. Underwood's daughter. If you like colorful blonds, she waa just the right sort; slim, with a delicate prettlness that belonged to city. Opposite her sat a youth who appeared to be a year or so He was well set up and rather good, looking, even if there was a surlr set to his features. He was drawing things on the table-cloth with tine of a fork.

In the living room there was a table, close to the dining room door, and OP the table was a telephone. Somebody with a heavy voice was using it; the Wreck identified the voice Instantly. It belonged to large man who would not share his gasoline. The girl and the youth, were listening, and the Wreck, put- i ting down his tray, listened pretending to be busy by wiping the soup plates with a napkin. "Well, you've got to get him," said the heavy voice, with a note of irascible authority.

"I don't care If yom have to try every place In the county. He ought to leave word where he goes. This Is Underwood talk- ing. What? Yes, certainly. Oh, yott understand now.

do you? Well, you i get him. Leave word every place you try that he's to call me. knows who It Is. And you tell him It's important, see? Toll him I the most Important Job he ever had. I don't call people up for nothing.

Got busy." There was the snap of a receiver roughly replaced and the croaking of a chair. "Haven't they locftto'l him yet, father?" called the girl. "Xo; and 1 don't believe they're) half trying." Underwood was enter- Ing the dining room. "Flrat they thought he was over at Fisher. Now they think he's gone bock to county seat.

I don't caro where Is. I want him." The owner of the ranch seated himself at the end of the table. The Wreck observed that he lowered him- self Into his chair with a slight stiffness of mowiient. It pleased him to think that ho knew the causa. Tho mudguard of the flivver showed a tell-tale warp, where it nudged him violently.

There was no mistaking Underwood, even without iho aid of spectacles. The Wreck had seen him In the white glare ot rood lights, tolling desperately at a crunk, anil the heuvlly Jowled face wna for ever murkcd in his memory. (Continued In Our Next Issue) lr.
