UPDATE Lee Margulies ON THE COVER: Merlin Olsen plays the bogus priest Father Murphy in the new series of that title that began with a two-hour chapter on NBC last week (Tuesdays at 8 p.m., Channels 4 and 39). In the premiere, written and directed by Michael Landon, we met John Michael Murphy, a drifter in a wild mining town in the Old West, who opens an orphanage in an abandoned saloon and pretends to be a priest to win community support. In this week's chapter, also written and directed by Landon, a genuine priest is outraged by Murphy's pretense. Co-starring in the series are Moses Gunn, Katherine Cannon and young Timothy Gibbs. Olsen, former football star of the Rams and an NBC sportscaster, played farmer Jonathan Garvey for the last three seasons on "Little House on the Prairie." He has a master's degree in economics from Utah State.

And while we're on the holiday beat, station WNET in New York is producing a two-hour special that is due to air on the Public Broadcasting Service New Year's Day. "The Show" is intended to provide a retrospective TELEVISION FIVE.
