to 10 nt to Jo ole and Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, October 18, 2000 Section 2 11 Nicholas family's 4 fire victims: Gloria, Toni, Gabrielle, Brandon By James Janega TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Relatives and friends will attend the funeral of a Broadview family on Wednesday morning, as authorities continue investigating the fire that led to the family members' deaths last week. Flames and smoke engulfed the Georgian-style home in the 2000 block of South 24th Avenue on Oct. 11 and took the lives of Toni Nicholas, 31, who had started a new job as a postal carrier the day before, her 3-month-old son Brandon, and her 3-year-old daughter Gabrielle. Also killed was Nicholas' mother-in-law, Gloria Nicholas, 69, the owner of the home and a matronly retiree who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Toni Nicholas' husband, Michael, and their oldest child, 6-year-old Michael were injured while escaping.

The family was spending the night in Gloria Nicholas' home while house hunting, said Nefra Brown, Toni Nicholas' sister. The day before, said Brown, Toni Nicholas had shifted from temporary to full-time work at the post office in Carol Stream. A strong-willed, spiritual woman, Toni Nicholas enjoyed reading the poetry and Christian literature, her sister said. Nicknamed "The Counselor" for her willingness to help others through their problems, the former Toni Burlock was a basketball player at Proviso East High School, graduating in 1987. She attended Illinois State University for a few years.

She and her future husband, also a basketball player, met while both were in high school. The couple would have celebrated their seventh anniversary this week. Together, they had hopes of one day opening a business. Gloria Nicholas, a retired postal worker, had devoted her recent energies to doting on children. She had her grandchildren over as often as possible, but also seemed to take endless enjoyment from neighborhood kids as well, Brown said.

Neighbor Thea Camara called Gloria Nicholas "a real neighbor" who often invited her over for a piece of freshly baked cake and kept an eye on neighbors' homes while they were away. "She was a sweet lady," Camara said. "A very nice lady. She'll be missed." The family's daughter, Gabrielle, was remembered as particularly quiet. Though she had learned to talk around her first birthday, she nonetheless had been a calm presence since.

"The first time I heard her say something, I said 'My goodness, she can And my sister said, 'I told you she could, you just have to catch "Brown said. "I think she had a personality where she'd back and check things out first." Already, her baby brother Brandon had begun to show a different side to the world, making cooing noises, and often. In addition to her sister, husband and oldest son, Toni Nicholas is survived by her parents, Carnell Jr. and Patricia Burlock; two other sisters, Camelle Mosley and Dedra Burlock; a brother, Carnell Burlock III; and her grandparents, John and Lillie Brown and Carnell Sr. and Irene Burlock.

Gloria Nicholas also is survived by three other sons, Jerome, Willie Jr. and Anthony Watson; a daughter, Sonya Pitts; 10 other grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service for the family will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 2151 W. Washington Chicago.
