6 Part III Sunday, August 2, 1981 E00 Anjjelee Sfttnee CAL 500: Officials Are Hoping Only the Track Will Be Burning 1 Mearsi "Our guys all wear (fire) suits in CART. In the Michigan race they waded right into the middle of the thing to get the job done. At Indianapolis they couldn't get anywhere near it I think that was a big factor in what happened to us. I hope they'll take some precautions next year and get 'em in (safety) equipment." Richter doesn't consider the invisibility of methanol flame to be serious. "Our problem is to minimize the chances of having a fire," he says.

"I can only hope that when they come in to refuel at Riverside we won't have any spillage or other problems but if we do, I'm quite certain we'll be able to arrest the situation." Mears still isn't certain what happened at Continued from 5th Page Michigan. The first was extinguished without incident; the second burned 14 people. Richter, who was there, says the Michigan fire "was almost arrested when the hose popped off the tank, and all of a sudden there was a couple hundred gallons of fuel coming out onto the fire." Before that, Richter says, "There was an excellent Job going on with people who were well-trained." Richter's crews are drilled in firefighting schools at the track, learning not only how to fight conventional gasoline fires but those involving methanol (methyl alcohol), which is used in the Indy-type cars. And, Richter adds, "Nomex (fire retardant) underwear has become a part of the firefighting team." "There's been a couple of theories," he says. "At first we thought the nozzle stuck when he (Murphy) pulled it out of the car it stuck open and sprayed fuel all over the car.

"Then there's a thought about the seal that goes on the tank after inspection. It's a wire with a lead seal on it. The lead seal was gone when we got (the car) back to the shop. "I watched a movie from Goodyear the other day when we were at Michigan and it looked like he (Murphy) could not get the nozzle into the car to begin with, like the wire seal had fallen over into the opening of the tank. We don't really know for sure.

"It's just something you hope will never happen again. of those freak deals." 7 mmwwwotT vk Aaoditad Prca Rick Mears was ablaze with invisible methanol flame when he leaped from his car in this year's Indy 500, one of three pit fires in the last four races, which have raised concern for the California 500.
