She bumped Carry a Tune, who in turn was carried into Pass of Gold. Skillful Joy overtook the fading Avigaition in the stretch, and then lugged in on Blush With Pride, who was trying to pass on the rail.

Eventually, Blush With Pride came up slightly on Skillful Joy. Racing Notei Laz Barren is ducking John Henry in one place, but not in another. The trainer of It's the One. who finished third in the Santa Anita Handicap, is sending his 4-year-old colt to New Orleans for next Sunday's New Orleans Handicap at the Fair Grounds. However, another Barrera horse, Lemhi Gold, who won a division of the San Marino Handicap Saturday, is being groomed for the San Juan Capistrano at Santa Anita on April 18.

John Henry, winner of the Santa Anita Handicap via disqualification, won the San Juan Capistrano in 1980 and is scheduled to run in the San Luis Rey Stakes on March 28 before a likely appearance in this year's Capistrano. Cassaleria, highest-ranked among California horses in the Los Angeles Times' Triple Crown ratings (he's No. 3), has been assigned top weight, 123 pounds, for next Sunday's San Felipe Handicap. The off track resulted in two scratches from Sunday's Santa Susana, Coffee Maid and Northern Style. track that was drying out, paid $14 to win.

Asked how he found racing room inside for the stretch run, Shoemaker said: "Nobody wanted the rail, so I took it. There's nothing wrong with the rail when they pack it down. So by the time we ran the race it was all right." Not all right was Shoemaker's distant position at the outset. "I would have had to go four wide on the first turn," Shoemaker said. "I took the filly in and saved ground, but I really didn't want to be that far back.

But the combination of saving the ground and getting through on the rail won the race for us." Shoemaker hadn't ridden Blush With Pride since last October. Laffit Pincay had been riding Blush With Pride recently, including a second-place finish in the Santa Ysabel Stakes last month. But Pincay had first call on A Kiss for Luck in the Santa Susana, then was taken out of the race altogether because of a suspension. "This was another great ride by the master," said Wayne Lukas, Blush With Pride's trainer. When you've won 848 stakes races in your career, as Bill Shoemaker has, there are going to be a few that you practically own.

The Santa Susana Stakes is one of these. Santa Anita first ran the Santa Susana in 1935, and Shoemaker didn't win that one, mainly because he was only three years old. But since Shoemaker won his first Santa Susana, aboard Blue Norther in 1964, he has kept coming back for more. The 50-year-old jockey added a ninth Santa Susana to his collection Sunday, and although heady rides are a dime a dozen in his legendary career, it would be difficult to find a more expert trip than the one he gave Blush With Pride. Blush With Pride, more than 10 lengths behind the leader, Avigai-tion, down the backstretch, found a hole on the rail at the top of the stretch and won the race by three-fourths of a length.

Favored Skillful Joy, who acted like anything but a lady during the running of the 3-year-old filly stake, finished second and Carry a Tune was third. Avigai-tion wound up fourth. In two prior trips to the Canadian city this season, they lost, 11-4 and 10-3 to Edmonton, and Wayne Gretzky got four goals in each game. But now they're on what for them constitutes a roll a three-game winning streak, their longest of the season, and one of those wins came against the Oilers. Crctzky did not score a goal in that game he had two assists in the 3-2 loss and has gone his last six games without a goal. The Kings, meanwhile, have yielded a total of only eight goals in their last three games. NEW 8c HATCH 92 nacta (7-4) paid 9143 00.
