But for the most part, Shure's rapport with a living audience would seem to be limited to being in the same place at the same time.

The revelation of feeling, the illumination of shared concerns, the interaction of coincidental realities these are clearly not high among his artistic priorities. He plays; we listen. Even on those terms, much could be sensed to be missing here. Great concen ADDRESS. INDEPENDENT THFRF CnMFTHIMn Now in his 70th year, Leonard Shure, the American pianist born in Los Angeles who went to Germany in his early teens to study with Artur Schnabel, then resettled in this country in 1933, returned to Los Angeles Friday night His recital in Royce Hall Auditorium at UCLA marked only his third appearance in this city since his birth here in 1910. An ingratiating if non -charismatic stage presence and healthy technical equipment made this program listing Schubert's "Wanderer" Fantasy, the Sonata, Opus 109, of Beethoven and Schumann's Sonata in F-minor, Opus 14 one easily approached. Shure had the resources and the assurance to traverse it without strain. He also had stylistic and idiomatic niceties under his fingers. Authority reigned in these performances; so did dexterity.

In moments, interest lagged. An inward rather than a projective pianist, Shure often seemed to be reciting only to himself, with the result that conviction, compulsion and communion are missing from his readings. This is not always true. Friday, portions of the slow movement in the Schubert work sang out, the Finale of Opus 109 was delivered affectingly and the quiet inner wa www FOR EVERYONE THEATRE GUIDE progrom tubjcct Is change without nettc GO OUT TO A MOVIE Jl 1 1 A PfSYPTIAN "Olirwooo Mori tunicas mm I lVl I I IMT 417-4117 I tnll Hf inruc. The opening of the E-major Sonata emerged tortured, but unre-solvedly so. And long stretches of the Schumann work one which can be vivid, colorful and handsomely eccentric came out merely uneventful.

By the final movement, when Shure became the victim of a bad memory lapse, minds were wandering. A patient, friendly and distinguished audience (including many other pianists) applauded dutifully at the end, but no encore was offered. -DAN CARIAGA caa ineeire nr program BARSTOW -8116 Ca Theatre tor Program Drlveln714256-1415 CaN Theatre tor Program ARCADE. 534 S. Emerging prominently in retrospect were Miss Terri's plaintive singing of a Spanish "Alabado," a Japanese children's song "Chi-Chi Pap-Pa" (with the Chorale) and a disarming "At the Gate of Heaven," a song from New Mexico arranged by and sung with harpist Dorothy Remsen.

The chorale was possibly at its most persuasive in a lusty "Men of Harlech," "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Danny Boy." "Greensleeves" sagged pretentiously, however. The superb precision, finely blended vo-calism, dynamic plasticity and infectious commitment of the Jubilee Singers were a joy to hear. Among their stylistically varied contributions were an exhilarating "Certainly, Certainly, Certainly, Lord" and "The Amen Chorus," the latter featuring several able soloists. A jazzy "Doodlin' was a marvel of subtle rhythmic drive. "Sinner Please, Don't Let This Harvest Past" and "Rock-a My Soul" also proved affecting.

For "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Set Down Servant" both choral ensembles joined forces. Wagner's arrangements of these pieces, less spontaneous and more self-conscious than they probably would have been if sung by the Jubilee Singers alone, netted a suitably lively finale. -ROBERT RILEY On one hand, latter-day exponents of folk music attempt to stick as closely as possible to original expressions by avoiding arty harmonic settings and other sophisticated intrusions. On the other hand, folk songs are felt by contemporary interpreters as being the legitimate vehicles for advanced, sometimes lush, harmonies, fancy imitative devices and accompaniments, etc. On Saturday night the Los Angeles Master Chorale, directed by Roger Wagner, hewed tastefully, for the most part, to the second philosophy in a "folk jubilee" surveying international lore as well as such American expressions as frontier songs and American spirituals.

On hand as guest ensemble were the Jubilee Singers, conducted by Albert McNeil, who offered contemporary apprehensions of spirituals, a gospel song and other expressions of our day. Both choral groups sang with magnificent professionalism. Anyone attending the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Saturday would have been out of luck in seeking untutored ways and means. The Master Chorale was supported variously by piano, celeste, oboe, flute, harp, double bass and percussion. Except for "Satisfied," calling for a rhythmic piano ostinato, McNeil's 21-member group sang unaccompanied.

Wagner and Salli Terri were just about equally responsible for the chorale's arrangements. Several names CULVER 2,9820 W. Washlngton-838-1893 Ana justice ror aii; saning uver CULVER 13,9820 W. For most of Louis Bagger's recital Saturday at the Harpsichord Center in Eagle Rock, the surface polish of C. P. E. Bach's gallant style proved more congenial to the soloist than did the dramatic tensions in works written during Haydn's "Sturm und Drang" period.

But at the close, Bagger gave over his earlier detachment and offered a thoroughly persuasive account of Haydn's Sonata No. 32 in minor a work that begins in conflict and ends with sudden grief. Sonata No. 32 was composed in 1776, a year that only slightly overlapped the emergence of the modern piano. This fact arguably allows for performance of the piece on a harpsichord, in this case a two-manual Zuckermann built in 1977 (and somewhat affected in pitch by the dampness of the evening).

Bagger's fingers flew through the toccatalike passages in the outer movements of this work, fluidly negotiating the shifts between intricate figures and rapid octaves. Phrasing was firm in detail, pur poseful and cleanly articulated. Rhythmic drive was properly relentless (even the sunny repose of the middle movement is broken by a section of percussive rhythm), making the abrupt termination of the work particularly effective. Pallid in comparison were the soloist's accounts of Haydn's Sonatas No. 22 in and No.

24 in also written during the composer's period of inner turbulence. Here, though the playing was accomplished and tidy, Bagger uncovered none of the emotional depths, exploited few of the contrasts and effected little blossoming of line in the works. Less problematic were the readings of three of C. P. E.

Bach's "Wurttemberg" Sonatas, W. 49-Nos. 2 in A-flat and No. 3 in minor and No. 5 in E-flat.

Bagger communicated the essential features of this Bach's style elegance, richness and sudden, at times disconcerting, pauses in the development of line. Most persuasive of all was the clarity with which Bagger presented the emergence of C. P. E. Bach's new kind of direct expression from an older form in the last movement of Sonata No.
