In fact, it is so sound that if spades break and the heart queen can be picked up, South will take all 13 tricks. Therefore, South wins the first club and plays his ace and king of trumps. East shows out and the best South can hope for is to make one overtrick. So he plays his king and deuce of hearts.

West follows svith the six and 10 and it is now up to South to make a most unusual safety play. He must refuse the heart finesse and rise with dummy's ace. This is going to cost him his overtrick if West started with the Q-10-8, but it insures his contract. He simply leads a third heart. East takes his queen, cashes a club and plays his king of diamonds.

South wins with dummy's ace and discards his remaining diamond on a good heart. West ruffs for the third defensive trick, but that ends his trick taking. If South took that heart finesse East would win, cash his club and lead the king of diamonds. South would win in dummy and play dummy's ace of hearts, but West would ruff right in and give his partner a diamond trick. For the first time in the history of the Nielsen sweepstakes, the network's "World News Tonight" came in first edging perennial frontrunner CBS by four-tenths of a rating point.
