"Smokey" Hoffman, 73, of Burlington City, a decorated firefighter who joined the Burlington City Fire Department in 1931, died Monday at Zurbrugg Memorial Hospitals, Rancocas Valley Division, in Willingboro. He was a member of the Endeavor Emergency Squad and president of the Mitchell Fire Company for 25 years, and he also served as a foreman and assistant driver. Both squads are in Burlington.

"Being active in the volunteer fire department was in his blood," his son James W. Hoffman said yesterday. "He spent much of his life on a fire truck." Mr. Hoffman received a heroism award in 1952 for rescuing an infant from a burning house on Lincoln Avenue. He served as chief of the Burlington City Fire Department in 1958.

He was a past president of the Burlington County Firemen's Association, the Burlington City Relief Association and the Burlington- City Exempt Firemen's Association. He worked for the now-closed Sterling Consumer Discount from 1929 until his retirement in 1984. As a young man, Mr. Glickman was an amateur bantamweight fighter.
