Is Studied "We used to be concerned primarily with a child's academic problems," said Dr. Agnes Sharp, school psychologist for Phoenix Elementary Schools, district 1, guest speaker at the Arizona State University faculty wives club meeting.

"Today we consider the whole child," she continued, "taking into account his problems in getting along with others, for example, or why he has a record of excessive absenteeism, Alumnae Plan Event The 10th annual husband and wife dinner party of Eta Chi Epsilon Alumnae will be at 6:30 p.m. today in the Phoenix College club room. Students who require study, she explained, are singled out by teachers, parents, school nurses, principals, attendance workers, school social workers, or speech and hearing therapists. The child is then carefully tested. Intelligence tests both ideation and motor- are administered, along with temperament and personality structure tests; and tests to evaluate the child's habit formations. Growth and development are measured, and the child's past history of health and accidents noted, in the series of physical tests and examinations. Also, central nervous system involvment and damage is checked.

It must be decided then whether the major problem is organic or functional, she said. If it is organic and unchange- Meeting Set By Sorority Sigma Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Psi sorority will meet at 12:30 p.m. today in the home of Mrs. Paul Williams, 442 W. Har- mont Dr.

Dr. Sharp said she studies about 200 youngsters during the course of each nine-month period school is in session. There are 25 schools in her district, serving 10,000 to 12,000 students.

.10 social workers in that same district 867 students during the nine-month period, she said, and in connection with this group, they conducted 1,982 interviews with parents and close relatives; 2,820 with school personnel other than teachers; 3,910 with teachers; and 951 with outside agencies. There were also 5,730 interviews with the 867 students, of which 4,566 were actual treatment therapy. As a team, the child study department must decide whether the child's problem is created by a home-family situation, something which needs improvement in the school environment, some physical problem requiring medical' attention, or a condition in the community. The next step, having decided where the problem arises, is to determine whether conferences with parents, or with school personnel would be beneficial, she said. If the father is out of work or the mother ill, for example, something might be done to assist in straightening out the problem.

If the child's trouble is caused by too much pressure on him to achieve, interpreting this to the parents might be of help. On the other hand, if the school situation is creating the trouble, she continued, conferences with principals, school personnel and the child study department or weekly play therapy sessions for the child with the school social worker might be the answer. "We have made great advancement in this area," Dr. Sharp said, "but in one way we have hardly scratched the surface of what could be done. We need more personnel, more community agencies, and always we need a keener awareness of the problems on the part of schools, families, the community and the public at large.
