The Philadelphia Inquirer 1 30 Friday, March 13. 1987 gllSHTLiFE The Doll's alias is Poindexter 1 In concert poprock I I 5 I It A By Ken Tucker Inquirer Popular-Uuttc Critic Buster Poindexter, who will perform tonight at the Chestnut Cabaret, is actually David Joban-sen, who once upon a time earned himself a place in rock-and-roll history for his brilliantly raw, witty work as the leader of the New York Dolls. When the Dolls, forerunners of late-70s punk rock, broke up, Johansen recorded a series of solo albums that, grievously, were overlooked by the rock audience. These days, Johansen is still witty but not nearly as raw in his Poindexter persona, he ANGELA BOFILL Pop singer. Misbehavin' Mama's, Rte 202, New Hope, 862-2840.

8 p.m. Thu. Anton ier, at Chestnut Cabaret Monday. Clubs in the city wears a tuxedo and croons vintage pop, jazz and rhythm-and-blues compositions, all the while maintaining a smooth, clever line of between-song patter. The result, by all accounts, is an uncommonly intelligent and rousing evening of entertainment.

Buster Poindexter and his Banshees Blue, at the Chestnut Cabaret, 38th and Chestnut Streets, at 11:15 p.m. today. Admission: $8. Information: 382-1201. Steve Earle, performing tomorrow night at the Chestnut Cabaret, is one of the hottest acts in the country.

Exactly what sort of act is another matter: Earle's mixture of country and rock music doesn't really result in what we think of as country-rock. Earle uses country music's narrative power to give his lyrics detail and weight; he uses rock-and-roll's bluntness to give his music its force. Earle's recent album, Guitar Town, a collection of small-town vignettes and raucous melodies, suggests that he is one of the most important people working in popular music. Steve Earle, with Wild Seeds, at the Chestnut Cabaret, 38th and Chestnut Streets, at 10 p.m. tomorrow.

Admission: $8.50 in advance, $10 at the door. Information: 382-1201. The Golden Palominos, led by drummer Anton Fier, will make a rare local appearance Monday night at the Chestnut Cabaret. Utilizing musicians from a wide variety of other bands (guitarist Jody Harris from the Raybeats and keyboardist Bernie Worrell from Parliament-Funkadelic, for example), Fier has created an on-again, off-again, semi-all-star rock band that makes highly intriguing, enjoyable music. This performance is also notable for the appearance of one of the band's lead singers, Matthew Sweet, whose recent debut album, Matthew Sweet (Epic), is one of the year's most underrated rock albums.

The Golden Palominos, at the Chestnut Cabaret, 38th and Chestnut Streets, at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Admission: $7.50 in advance, $9 at the door. Information: 382-1201. mi i in mi j.ji l.im.mjj.

BEAUSOLEIL Bayou Boogie (Rounder) Pop artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Paul Simon have taken rather impressive stebs at Cajun-inspired tunes, and those who have enjoyed those attempts just might ba ready for this album. Well, maybe. This is wonderful Cajun-based music with enough rock, country and influences to please a lot of folks. The catch is that most of the lyrics are sung in French.

Still, this is one lively, good-time session of swamp rock or whatever you care to call it. PATRICE RUSHEN Watch Out (Aristal 6 Rushen, who established herself several years ago as a jazz-rooted pianist, moved into the pop-R ranks once she began singing end became comfortable with her new status. While the Rushen voice is a tN instrument, it is pleasant enough, and Rushen controls it quite effectively. She was involved in writing much of the material here. Rushen has developed into formidable, versatile talent.
