10-D Wednesday, March 25, 1987 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notice. Death Notices OBITUARIES Singer Joy Simpson, 40, during S. Africa tour liMMUM- win iii i ir-vi" 1 Vmted Press Inter national CPE TOWN, South Africa J6y Simpson, a Philadelphia opera singer I who collapsed on stage last week during a South African tour, died in Cape Town early today, a hospital staff officer said. The soprano collapsed Thursday at the Cape Town City Hall after singing the black spiritual, "Sometimes I Feef Like a Motherless Child." Doctors said she had suffered a brain hemorrhage and slipped into a coma. "Her condition had deteriorated so much that the doctors could do nothing for her," a senior matron at City Park Hospital said this morning.

She arrived in South Africa on Mjarch 3. Her tour became controversial because she broke a cultural boycott of South Africa called by opponents of apartheid. The singer, who is black, was criticized by local black opposition leaders and by anti-apartheid musicians iii- the United States and Europe. She was born May 8, 1946, one of eight children of an illustrious Philadelphia musical family, Her par-efits, Mclvin and Evelyn, and her ftye sisters and twov brothers have performed together for many years as the Singing Simpson Family, a gospel group. 'A lyric soprano, she favored spirituals and gospel music.

She studied at Temple University, the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and the Julliard School of Music in New York. She made her professional debut at Carnegie Hall in February 1983 with the American Symphony Orchestra.
