B. Mayer ruled MGM during the studio's heyday, he boasted he had "more stars than in the heavens." Move over. Louie agent Irving "Swifty" Lazar is the modern-day Mayer.

He had more stars at his annual Oscar bash at Spago Monday night than any studio executive currently has under contract. In one corner of the room were Liz Taylor and George Hamilton; Revenge of the Spider people William Hurt. Sonja Braga and Hector Babenco; Lionel Richie, Sidney Poitier. Lola Falana, Rebecca de Mornay, Audrey Hepburn, James Stewart, Jane Seymour, Joan Collins and Peter Holm, Ten Garr and Cher. In another corner were John Huston, Fox chairman Barry Diller, Frank Yablans, Michael Caine, David and Gladyce Begelman, Robin Williams, Peter Bogdanovich, Larry Gordon, Meryl Streep.

George Burns, Sally Field, Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange. In another room, there were Barbara Walters and fiance Merv Adelson, Marvin Davis, Walter Matthau, Jackie Collins, Lou Pitt, Alice Walker and Mike Medavoy. And how did Swifty keep his crowd happy? Like an old-time movie mogul, he moved about Spago, chatting, patting, kissing, hugging and greeting his invitation-only crowd. Anyone trying to crash was promptly escorted out. The soiree began at about 5 p.m.

and Lazar and his wife, Mary (who spent some of the time at the Oscars), finally departed at about 2 a even though the party was still rolling. Here's some of the behind-the-scenes juice: No doubt about it, the sentimental favorite was John Huston, who directed Prizzi's Honor. The 79-year-old patriarch of the Huston clan had to be helped into Spago by friends. Although he spoke robustly to colleagues, he now uses a portable oxygen tank to help ease his emphysema. "It's funny," said Out of Africa's Klaus Maria Brandauer, who lost the Oscar for best supporting actor to Don Ameche, "when Europeans come to America and have an accent, they always get cast as villains.

I am working my way up the ladder. Now I play heroes." Klaus, who played a super-villain in Never Say Never Again, flew to Vienna to rejoin his production of Hamlet. First son Ron Reagan was inside and outside Spago covering the party for ABC's Good Morning America. At one point, his crew blazed its TV lights at the crowd and Lazar asked the crew to leave. Reagan and crew politely left, but not before they thanked Lazar for his help.

And finally, Lionel Richie, whose "Say You, Say Me" won an Oscar for best song, conceded that he wanted to come back for another metal man, but said that next time it would be for acting. "You bet. I'd love to win one for acting." Sydney Pollack, winner for best director, said winning "feels great, so great, but I'm so interviewed-out." Best-actor-nominee James Garner said he wasn't disappointed because "I had fun. I really didn't expect it, anyway." Best-actor-nominee Jack Nicholson arrived with longtime companion and best-supporting-actress Anjelica Huston. He said he'd "settle for that (Anjelica's winl any day." Best-actor William Hurt arrived just seconds before best-actor-contender Jon Voight.

Hurt, obviously elated by his win, said, "I don't know what to say. I guess, God bless us all. How's that?" Huey Lewis, whose "The Power of Love" from Back to the Future didn't win an Oscar, said he still "had a great time" and he plans to take a break from his new acting career to cut another album. Cliff Robertson, who picked up an Oscar for best actor in Charly some years back, said he was on his way to St. Croix to film a CBS telemovie called Dreams of Gold.

At her second callback (on the same day she had an interview at Yale University), a nervous Green met Spielberg, the film's executive co-producer, and they talked about "Capricorns and Rome," among other things, she says. While the fledgling actress was on location filming Summer Rental in St. Petersburg, last year. Seltzer flew down so that Green could make an audition tape for Lucas. "I was surprised when I got the movie," Green says.

"When I finished the all they said was "Thank you very Like most Hollywood hopefuls, Green had acted in school plays. But she had no idea what moviemaking would be like. She expected it would be like a play where the actors begin at the beginning and end at the end. Instead, scenes are shot out of order. For Lucas, shot over 2l2 months, the cast members stayed in the same hotel, with people knocking on one another's doors at all hours of the night almost like a dorm or camp. "But at summer camp," Green jokes, "at least there's a rest period." Her leading role in Lucas was more demanding than her previous movie parts, she says, with Seltzer working closely with his young and, in some cases, inexperienced cast. Written by Seltzer, and somewhat autobiographical, this project marked his debut as the director of a feature film. He was striving for "perfection," Green observes. During the summer of 1984, would-be movie actress Kerri Green, now 19, was frying up poultry parts at the local Roy's near her Woodcliff Lake, N.J., home and commuting into New York for auditions. Green had already appeared in commercials for Bold 3 detergent and Jordache jeans and had even won a small part on Search for Tomorrow (well, they showed her hand holding a pen). But almost faster than you can say "three wings and an order of fries," Green landed a small role in last summer's modest hit The Goonies, which was quickly followed by a bigger part in the bomb Summer Rental. Then, just three days after that movie wrapped, Green joined the cast of Lucas in her first starring role. The film a bittersweet teen comedy opened here Friday.

Now, Green, a Vassar College freshman on spring break, is ensconced in a posh suite at the Westbury Hotel, attended to by a publicist, and is expressing her amazement at all that has happened to her in the last two years. "It is so unexpected, it goes beyond my wildest dreams," says the actress, who is small and sweet, with a glorious fall of auburn hair. "Sometimes I just sit back and think, 'Omigod, I'm in the It still hasn't sunk in. "It doesn't feel real at all, but it feels good." In Lucas, filmed last spring outside Chicago, Green plays Maggie, the new girl in town, who wins the hearts of both Cappie, the handsome high school football captain (Charlie Sheen), and Lucas, the small, brainy 1 oddball (Corey Haim). Maggie is a young girl approaching womanhood, tentative and unsure, trying to discover where she belongs.

The moviemakers searched 13 cities to find their young cast members. Says the film's director, David Seltzer, "Kerri is enormously soft, sensitive and intelligent. It was her decision to go to college (not without some family pressure), and, so far, she has worked only during school vacations. But Green, who is studying fine arts, doubts she'll be able to finish college in four years. "1 try to think of school this is going to sound awful as something I do in my free time," she concedes. As of now, there are no plans for her next film project. She must fin Lucas, Green is finding her way at a new school.
