NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE NEW YORK- Clara Rockmore, a musician who was trained as a violinist but became famous principally as a soloist on the theremin, an early electronic instrument, died May 10 at her home in Manhattan. She was 88. The theremin, invented in 1920 by Leon Theremin, produces a pure, eerie, sliding tone that has been compared to a disembodied, wordless soprano voice or an enchanted cello. In recent years, thanks in part to the 1994 film "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey," the instrument has developed a cult following, as has Ms. Rockmore, who appeared in the movie.

She also was the focus of a video documentary, "Clara Rockmore, the Greatest Theremin Virtuosa," released last month. Describing Ms. Rockmore's performances, Steve Martin, the director of the theremin film, said, "Clara is to the theremin what Andres Segovia and Jimi Hendrix combined are to the guitar." Ms. Rockmore was born Clara Reisenberg in Vilna (now Vilnius) in Lithuania. She showed considerable talent as a violinist before she was 4, and in 1915 she became the youngest musician ever admitted to the St.

Petersburg Conservatory. Her principal teacher there was Leopold Auer, whose other students had included Mischa Elman and Jascha Heifetz. In the mid-1920s, Ms. Rockmore moved to New York, where she resumed her studies with Auer, who also had immigrated. After a few years, however, she began to have muscular and joint problems that curtailed her career as a violinist.

At around the same time, she met Theremin and decided to. study his electronic instrument, becoming his student and close friend. Ms. Rockmore's influence on the instrument itself included suggesting structural changes to improve its articulation. Ms.

Rockmore gave one of the first theremin concerts in the United States in 1934. Publisher Lord Cudlipp ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON -Lord Cudlipp of Aldingbourne, one of the most combative figures in British journalism and the man credited with creating the feisty modern British tabloid, died Sunday from lung cancer at age 84, his family said. Lord Cudlipp, who became Fleet Street's youngest editor at age 24 when he took over the Sunday Pictorial, now the Sunday Mirror, died at home in Chichester, southern England, family members said. With his philosophy of "publish and be -the title of one of his books--he led the field in questioning the status quo while at The Daily Mirror. Other tabloids followed suit.

He criticized the system of awarding knighthoods and peerages although he was made a life peer in 1974-and accused the government of "bungling" the 1956 Suez Canal crisis. He lashed out at Britain's attempts to keep pace with the West's postwar industrial boom: "Wake up Britain: We're living in the past. We're too slow. Too sleepy." But the greatest reaction came when he criticized Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II's sister, for hesitating about whether to marry, Peter Townsend, a divorced man who was unacceptable to the establishment. The headline "Come on Margaret: Please make up your mind" caused a public furor.

Hugh Kinsman Cudlipp left school at 14 to be a reporter for a tiny Welsh newspaper. Other reporting jobs followed, and he joined the London-based Daily Mirror in 1935. He worked his way through the ranks, serving twice as Sunday Pictorial editor. In 1968, he was appointed chairman of International Publishing now called the Mirror Group, which owns The Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror. It is one of the world's largest publishing groups.
