6-K Wednesday, July 6, 1988 The Philadelphia Inquirer Harvey's 'Family Double Dare' is axed TV tonight By GAIL SHISTER TVradio talk -A By Pavid Biuncuili Anyone who saw and loved Bull Durham should lake great pains to see tonight's late-night repeat of the 1IUO telemovie Long Gone a similarly wild, funny and sexy comedy-drama about the boys (and girls) of summer and sport of minor-league baseball. It stars William L. Petersen as the same type of wily veteran played by Kevin Costner in Bull Durham, and co-stars Virginia Madsen as the equally aggressive equivalent of Susan Sarandon. Madsen, by the way, also stars in another HBO show tonight: an en-Core showing of an episode of The Hitchhiker. i by a CIA honcho and trained to be international assassins.

Stirling Silliphant is exec producer. Short stuff. Former Family Feud host Richard "Hot Lips" Dawson is preparing to take the Groucho Marx host role in NBC's updated edition of its 195W1 hit, -You Bet Your Ufe. The new expected to break into NBC's daytime lineup next season, will feature a new format and closing round. Former Saturday Nighty Live regular Harry Shearer will offer his warped interpretation of the political process at both -national party conventions in humorous segments for NBC's Today show.

In addition, he'll do daily 10-minute hits for National Public Radio, which carries his weirdo program, he Show. Bob Uecker and the Pointer Sisters will host this week's Friday Night Videos on NBC As expected, pregnant Lisa Bonet (Denise Huxtable) is leaving NBC's A Different World to return to The -Cosby Show as a college dropout NBC Entertainment chief Brandon Tartikoff says Bonefs pregnancy will not be worked inta the Cosby story line. When Fox suddenly canceled Family Double Dare last week, nobody was more surprised than WMGK-FM morning man Harvey, announcer for the New York-based kiddie show. "The sets were assembled, Ihostl Marc Summers had flown In from and we were in rehearsal all day Wednesday," says Harvey. "We were supposed to go into production Thursday.

I had already checked into my hotel room and unpacked." They got the word late Wednesday night. Fox said that the Saturday-night Family Double Dare, now in its first season, was axed because of "creative differences," In addition. Fox said, it had been Intended only as a summer experiment (So why were 13 new episodes ordered? Hmmm.) Inside sources, however, said that Fox didn't consider the show a suitable lead-in for its new newsmagazine, The Reporters, which will debut July 30. Shed no tears for ol' Harv and Summers. Production is scheduled to resume on the duo's original Double Dare, both in Fox syndication (weekdays at 4:30 p.m.

on Channel 17) and on cable's Nickelodeon network. replacement, faiing, 17, a Great Valley High senior, was a regular on ABC's Max Headroom. Sticks and stones. CBS This Morning co-anchor Kathleen Sullivan says she's "absolutely devastated" by recent gossipolumn items contending that she's a high-strung terror on the job. "The whole thing is such bunk," she says.

"I am not hysterical or high-strung. I think I am professional. When a man asks that things be done correctly and then makes sure they are, he's called professional. If a woman docs it, she's considered difficult" Sullivan suspects that some of the non-flattering items were planted by her former colleagues at ABC. "It's a funny little grapevine," she says.

Casting flash. Peter Strauss (Rich Man, Poor Man), Connie Sellecca (Hotel) and David Morse (St. Elsewhere) will star in NBC's Brotherhood oj the Rose, based on the best-selling David Morell novel of the same name. Production begins Monday in New Zealand. The four-hour mini-series is about two orphans raised as brothers Wiseguy," at 10 Ken Wahl stars p.m.

on Channel 10. Since everyone was set to go, why didn't Fox simply convert the Family Double Dare set to the Double Dare version and shoot a bunch of episodes? "We all suggested it, and we could have easily done it," says Harvey. "Apparently, the Fox network and Fox syndication aren't in communication with each other." Meanwhile, Harvey and Summers will appear in two Nickelodeon home videos in the works: Double Dare's Messiest Moments and Double Dare: Inside the Slop. Catchy titles. More Fox tales.

Speaking of The Reporters, three of the show's new correspondents will come from the network's syndicated hit A Current Affair. They'll do both gigs. They are: Steve Dunleavy, formerly of the New York Post; Krista Bradford, formerly a TV reporter in Boston, and Rafael Abraraowitz, who got the Robert Chambers "Preppy Murder" home videotape story for Affair. Fox producers are looking for two more reporters. Among the stories in progress: a close-up look at the royal family, and an investigative piece from Chattanooga, where new evidence has recently surfaced in a 31-year-old murder case.

Local hero. Latest project for Malvern teen Chris Young is Prom Night, an NBC coming-of-age flick that begins production tomorrow in LA. Brian Bloom (As the World Turns) and Alyssa Milano (Growing Pains) cc-star. Young's London-based pilot Jake's Journey, starring Monty Python's Graham Chapman didn't make CBS's fall lineup, but it may pop up as a midseason American Masters (8-9 p.m., Chs. 23, 52) Philadelphia painter Thomas Eakins is profiled.

PBS repeat. WiscRuy (10-11 p.m., Ch. 10) Part 4 of 'The Steelgrave Arc" has Vinnie (Ken Wahl) caught between maintaining his cover and avenging the death of a relative. Ray Sharkey, as crime boss Sonny Steelgrave, is the one really worth watching here, along with series co-star Jonathan Banks. CBS repeat.

Invitation to Hell (midnight-2 a.m., Ch. 6) Before it was cast, this 1984 telemovie directed by Wes Craven could have stood a chance. Craven, after all, directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street. Invitaton to Hell has an Jntriguingly sexy premise: It's about a happy family that moves to an insidious suburb and falls under the spell of the devil who's a woman. Joanna Cassidy, as the wife who turns increasingly malevolent, achieves the proper eerie tone, but Robert Urich, as the husband, is boring.

And "Susan Lucci of All My Children, as the slinky Satan, is often hilarious as she overacts so relentlessly that she's more like a bullhorn than a siren. Cable Mein Kampf p.m., A E) This 1961 Swedish documentary parallels, rather than dramatizes, Adolf Hitler's infamous written tract, and shows (with lots of rare footage) the rise and fall of the Third Reich. The Ilitchhikert "Last Scene" p.m., HBO) Madsen plays an insecure actress who'll do anything to work with a famous but deranged film director played by Peter Coyote. Coyote, of course, could have "Home on Deranged" as his theme song. He specializes in playing antisocial characters such as William Bradfield Upper Merion High School's mesmerizing murderer, In NBCs Echoes in the Darkness mini-series.

Long Gone a.m., HBO) This is one of HBO's very best homemade movies and one of the very best telemovies made by any network, cable or broadcast, in 1987. Petersen is the minor-league veteran who rallies his old and new teammates for a wildly improbable shot at the pennant, Madsen is the smart and steamy baseball groupie who gives him a "limited trial offer," and the team's smarmy father-and-son owners are played, in an inspired bit of casting and acting, by Henry Gibson and comic-magician Teller (in a rare speaking role).
