"It's like, sometimes I just want to go, 'Well, let me ask you the same question about your You know what I'm saying." There is no bitterness in her deep and fast-paced voice, totally unlike Mansfield's breathy little-girl tones. But there is a trace of frustration at what people expect her to say about a woman she can barely remember. Mariska (Mar-ISH-ka), the youngest of six children, was just 3 years old when her mother, a screen siren of the 1950s, was killed in a car crash.

'She was then raised by her father, Mickey Hargitay, a Hungarian-born former Mr. Universe who turned actor, and his second wife in a protective atmosphere that had little to do with the Hollywood scene. "I know about her through word of mouth, through my father, through my grandmother, through my brothers and my sisters," said Mariska Hargitay. "It's so hard, sometimes I don't know what to say. I just know she was a wonderful woman, a great, determined person, and a really good actress.

I've seen some really great stuff of hers, and she was a dynamic, electric human being. In that way, I hope to carry out that part of the family." Hargitay only became interested in her mother's career after she began acting in high school plays. "My father kept us away from show business, so I had a very normal, Hollywood-less life, and it's been good forme," she said. "It's nice to know that it was my decision and no one pushed me into it. I didn't really have any footsteps to follow because there were none there.

My dad left acting when I was young, and if I was following in his footsteps, I'd go into real estate." Hargitay entered the Miss Beverly Hills contest on a whim, won and went on to finish fourth in the Miss California contest. She got an agent and landed small roles in Star 80 and GhouJies. Two other films, both unreleased, followed while she continued her acting studies at UCLA. She said she had little in common with Jesse Smith, the character she portrays in Downtown, a show that traces the interwoven lives of four ex-convicts and their parole officer (Flashdance star Michael Nouri). "I've got four more months to develop this girl," she said.

"It's like a new challenge every week, this grappling with a person so different than "Jesse's got problems in her life; environmentally she's had a bad life, so she's got a chip on her shoulder, she's got an edge to her because of the way people have dealt with her." Hargitay was nicknamed "Mighty" by friends because of her extroverted and forceful personality. "I'm a simple girl. I have a simple life. It's best to keep things that way, I've learned," she said. She said she had been arrested once for a traffic ticket.

Her character, Jesse, was jailed for something more serious, but the show's writers are still workjng out exactly what she did. "Originally, she knifed her boyfriend, but I think they want to cool it down just a tad because that's a little severe and I'm not that hostile," Hargitay said. "I'm explosive and a little bit turbulent, but I'm a-little more level-headed than that. I think she (Jesse) would have beat his brains out before she'd knife him." Although she appears as fit as she was at 17, Hargitay is on a diet. "You've got to be skinny for TV.

The camera puts the weight on you," she said. "My measurements are 36-25-36, the same as when 1 won Miss Beverly Hills," she said, adding that she had been astounded to read that her mother's figure measured 41-18-38. "Can you believe that, an 18-inch waist? Like, did she have her intestines taken out?" Monday, Sept. IS, noon to p.m. 02-b jrW law'-i new band ai TV dynamite! -ADV.

3) Make no mistake: This is the TV show of 1986, one that instantly joins NBC's St. Elsewhere as a series worth committing to every week. It comes from Steven Bochco, co-creator of NBC's Hill Street Blues, and Terry Louise Fisher, former producer of CBS's Cagney Lacey. It's an inspired teaming. Bochco contributes his humor, intelligence and fascination with legal maneuverings (a regular feature on Hill Street), while Fisher, a former assistant district attorney, contributes both her inside knowledge and a female perspective, something generally missing from Hill Street and St.

Elsewhere. Harry Hamlin and Richard Dysart are the stars of L. A. Law, but Jill Eikenberry is a more sympathetic lawyer and Corbin Bernsen is the obvious, delightfully slimy standout as divorce lawyer Arnold Becker. Superb stuff.
